So, finally got back from work at nearly midnight last night after waiting half the day for a flight because of the wind. Took my dog up to one of the farms this morning to place my camera to see if I can spot what I thought was a mink, naturally took the gun, what with it being the last day of the season.
At least 8 good pheasants flushed and all went the wrong bloody way………..except for this fella.
Back out tomorrow night, possibly humming a few ABBA tunes, and then check the camera on Saturday.
Unfortunately back to work on Sunday for 3 weeks so will leave the camera in place.

Dog first, then the vixen 40 mins later, followed the exact same route.
Watched another digging for moles, but at nearly 300 yards and a stiff wind, he or she crested the rise and wondered off... I'll go to that field next time

Missing is (increasingly) normal for our your age oul fella!
I confess that I had the same this week at Roe - made up for it though with three nice 200m shots soon afterwards so confidence was restored. The instantaneous feelings that come with a miss are weird and many - ranging from bloody gun, crap ammo (homeloads - mine), must have knocked the scope, what the hell? Usually culminating in the realisation it was none of the above rather it was simply the nut behind the bolt! Fortunately it doesn’t happen very often and happily it was a good miss i.e. no animals were injured as a result of my efforts.

Couldn't hold a crosshair last night, bloody gale, had to pack it up.

The goose thief, final chapter (I hope!)
Another daytime fox seen on the goose thief's patch, so out I go Tuesday night. First nigh time foray with my new Telos LRF!!! New toy, oops I mean essential tool of work
Its incredibly still, not a breath of wind; but dark enough with the cloud cover. After half an hour of scanning and pottering about, a fox appears in a vacant horse field, mousing about and making mad little dashes thither and yon.
Eventually settles in the middle of the field, curls up like a cat and seems to take a nap. A second fox appears beetling down a barbed wire fence line, going away.
No shot from where I stand on sleepy fox, as the farm house etc are long of the fox; so I creep along a hedge to reposition. I cover a good distance to get a safe backstop, but in doing so alert the fox's spider senses; she is up and off! I quickly get the 204 up on the sticks, just in time to swing round and get her in the crosshairs, sat in front the far hedge, staring back. I always snick the trigger forward to apply the 'set' trigger just before squeezing off the shot - a healthy thump from the bib shot and fox folds on the spot. I wait 5 or 10 mins, but no sign of that second fox. Pace into the shot site 140 m, and its a good condition vixen.
Well, that's that I guess.
As I am about to gracefully clamber over the five bar gate heading back to the truck, I have one last good scan round - don't we all?? - and am pleasantly surprised to see a fox sniffing about the shot site of the first one. Up on the sticks and a side on chest this time. Pace in to pickup, 80 m and it is a big heavy dog fox. Quite a lump thinks I, as I heave it over the sheep fence into the hedge base.
The goose thief? probably, but the next couple of weeks will tell. I have been keeping numbers down to a reasonable level on this area for years; but seen quite a spike in numbers from mid December to now. There are rumours that a well meaning lady has released a few 'rescued' town foxes not many miles away, but could all be just gossip and nothing more. To say the sheep farmers are not happy is an understatement.

I am using the Guied 25 which I find pretty good, but I was thinking of upgrading to the 50 as the optics where house have them on a very good offer

I’ve also got the Guide 35, very pleased with it. I thought about getting the 50 from OPW so that my son had his own unit, crazy cheap for a good spotter.I am using the Guied 25 which I find pretty good, but I was thinking of upgrading to the 50 as the optics where house have them on a very good offer
Decided to hold off for now and wait a bit to see if any good offers come up on units with a lower netD to get better background detail.
Had a play with the foxpro thingy, figured out what position switches should be in, seemed to run away with itself at one point
