Rat Bait

Got a rat taken up residence 5m from my back door in a flower bed. Had a couple of fens in tunnels baited up for over a week with peanut butter and various nuts. Trailcam shows it (or them ) just milling around but not going into tunnel. Bait goes without the traps tripping but there’s also a mouse about. Could probable shoot it with air rifle but can’t get a great angle from the window.

Is there a failsafe bait that they will fall for ?

TIA Ff

Glue pads over a large area probably the most effective although not the most humane from some perspectives.

Although some say shooting stuff isn’t humane 🤣

I’ve just baited my Freaking attic with bread crumbs and out back of house cos I’m pee’d off now. Put NV on air rifle and put a seat opposite end of attic. Checking now and again to see if crumbs have been touched and as soon as they have I’ll spend 1/2 hour there 🙄

Remove/restrict feed source. Traps with good poison bait. Got rid last year with that combo and a few shot. This Summer got lucky and got fat mamma rat up at the bird feeder with the 22.
Have another problem now, buggers like chewing Cat5 cable...

We use Racumin foam, its kind of like blue shaving foam that sticks to their fur and they injest it while cleaning themselves. Cans need to be room temperature for the foam to expand properly and just squirt a golf ball sized blob in the burrow then cover with a couple of slates to keep other animals away. We don't use it in buildings where the dogs go though.

As for baited traps, Ive has success with black cats baited with jelly beans or piece of pepperami.

If you are having trouble with Rats indoors or outside the best method is to purchase a Larsen trap the hexagonal type, put the bait in the enclosed center and you have 4 traps in one. It works., if you catch a non tgt species just open the door and no harm done.

If it's a small domestic issue, peanut butter combined with

Weather the boxes outside for a week with bait and not set to get rid of the smell and wear gloves so as not to transfer your scent, rats are Neophibic.

Combine it with a grain or paste poison bait in secure boxes along a wall or hedge line such as these,

Give your traps/ tunnels a chance rats don’t like something new in their environment and will avoid it for a while. Remove other food sources and force them to go for the bait on the pressure plate

burrow baiting is the fastest way to deal with a rat infestation. waiting a week for a rat to get used to a box, making sure it doesnt smell of me or the dogs.
actually if its one rat shooting would be quicker.
i would never achieve anyhing with some of the ideas above.
rats will and do eat anything if hungry enough.
once they become established trapping can be very slow.
mice will trap alot quicker normally, especially field mice. kill that then you will know if the rat is taking the fen traps.
if you use any poison read the label and check your legal
