Rats, a loosing battle

Yet to see a labrador or a robin in one of these. Bait can be peanut butter or bacon fat. Pour the fat into the little cup whilst hot and let it set there ;)

Put it either right next to cover or under cover. Rats love to have a roof over their heads.

Set a trap in a box. Use 3inch square rain water pipe about 1 ft in and out arrange so rat has to go over centre of trap. Cover plate with saw dust. Suitably position and put safety on trap. Them will soon get used to it. You could bait it with whole maize. Bird and dog proof and works 24 7.
Air rifle with N V and thermal would soon sort out most of them.

Thanks folks. Heaps to work with here. The diy may take me a bit of work,(never my strongest suit) but we’ll manage.

One of the blooming snap traps was half dragged into a rat hole this morning. Mouse must have set it off,(another pain) and then the rat dragged it away so these pipe traps may be the way to go. Thanks again!

Catch a robin!

Why aren't your traps in a tunnel or box?

Rats love the security of a sanctuary, especially if they can escape, I mean seeing and exit.

I haven’t personally but I’ve also seen photos where robins have been caught despite the trap being covered over. They’re very curious which is why I’ve been unsetting everything at first light to avoid this.

Aye but if it's to dark for them they won't go in.
I've never caught in a fen tunnel birds or voles. Just squirrels and rats.
Hope you get it sorted, dam things are everywhere...

We bought one of those. It worked brilliantly for a while. Then the sachet of bait started getting a bit empty. Guess what ? You can’t buy replacement sachets, at least here in Ireland. So we’ve filled it with chocolate spread and peanuts. A messy job, the original bait was superb.
We only use it indoors, at nearly €200 it’s a bit expensive to site around feeders.

Just a quick point, in the first video, the man is filling the barrel with water to drown the rats. Drowning is expressly illegal in the UK as a method of dispatch, so you would need to leave the barrel dry and humanely dispatch the rats.
Yes you are quite right...also he is in the US or Canada by the sound of his audio.

Yep I’ve no intention of drowning anything. But the idea of a pipe and a barrel is interesting

Illegal here since the 1950s

Which part is illegal? The gin trap part? Assuming it’s not because of using meat/bacon.

This is coming from someone who doesn’t have a gin trap but assumed that’s the same as a mark 4 fen which seems to be legal.

Anyway that’s a whole different avenue I’m not going down. Was just curious
