Hello all, I'm Dave and I have recently purchase land up in Northumberland. The land is blighted with wild deer and this is likely to interfere with my large scale planned tree planting scheme which I intend to embark on soon. For this reason, once I relocate back to Northumberland I intend to get a rifle and police the area myself for a few years until the trees are larger. I already have one professional stalker on there, day shooting. I have experience with SA80, light machine gun and of course, shotguns. I once had a (mostly obedient) springer spaniel that bolted, chased and caught a young deer. Also, I am a lawyer.

Paying a stalker on your Private land ? You do of course realise you could get a syndicate of very experienced stalkers on to remove the vast majority at no cost or even a possible surplus .
Its just about getting the right guys

Malc..... If he's planting trees with grant aid I'm afraid syndicates aren't the way forward.... the money is there to ensure deer control is done in accordance with the schemes requirements so having someone who's paid to do both the deer control and the associated paperwork that's required is the way forward (the deer officers preference also) I could put a syndicate here on the estaye in a heartbeat and bring in 10k pa ..... but the grant money is worth 165k pa so to ensure we get that it been recommended that we have one person paid to do the work...

On the other hand..... if the trees are self funded then the help from the revenue of a small syndicate may be an option as opposed to paying someone...

Dave.... Welcome to the site btw!....

Welcome!
I was stalking in Northumberland recently (I have family there). It's a beautiful place!
Good luck with your project.

He doesn't say that he's paying the stalker, only that he's "professional". But I hope he is.
People expecting to get an efficient, effective, professional deer management service for free is one of the things that's lead to us having such a problem with deer.

I'm from Morpeth originally and have Family in Long Framlington. Are you also Northumbrian? I hope I can arrange to move back up there soon.
Welcome to the site, I do most of my shooting very close to Long Fram, Beautiful place and good luck with your move, I hope it goes well

Welcome, I'm up in the Scottish Borders but am down in the North Northumberland coastal area a few times a year without touring caravan. Lovely bit of the World

Yep, not paying but the lad is paid by defra in respect of their adjacent stretches of land. The deer jump over the fence from the woods to my land.

That is interesting. My priority is to stop the deer eating my tree saplings (they have to be planted small to take and grow well). As landowner and for pest control purposes I believe I can shoot at night. A near round the clock watch would be pretty useful!

Shooting deer at night is illegal. You have to apply to Natural England for a licence to do so.

I'm looking at the new sustainable farming incentive Silvopasture (agroforestry) where grazing animals still graze but there are also lots of trees. This new offer could be worth up to £849 per ha (for ten years) for high density in field. Which scheme do you get £165k pa and is it still available? I know that Forestry Commission are increasing their EWCO. Is that the scheme you are signed up with?
