I arranged a long weekend with my regular clients to visit my long time friend Lee (ex member Norfolk Deer Search), the target, as many deer that we could manage to cull, no limit on numbers, this was culling, full stop, all high seat work (it's so flat!) except for myself and a friend who knew the area well.
Friday evening started well, several roe/muntjac/cwd culled, in fact one guy shot a potential gold medal, his first CWD!
Saturday morning/evening followed the same and the numbers were rising, filling Lee's larder, so after a Sunday morning stalk we did some skinning and butchery.
Sunday evening, we were all WhatsApp messaging, reds had arrived, 22 hinds, none presenting a shot, 8 stags in another area, one had cast, 6 were spikers, the largest had barbed wire in its antlers.
I was cursing myself, I was miles away from the action, at least I thought I was, after an hour they crossed in front of me, 300m+ I didn't risk a shot with my .243 at that range and close to the border, I just enjoyed the sight I waved them goodbye.
Final figures were
3 roe
9 muntjac
15 cwd of which 2 were possible gold medals, even with the new rules, they are big.
We just want to thank Lee for a brilliant weekend, that's the way to get deer numbers down if you can, a top bloke, very generous and so knowledgeable, I did my DSC2 with him over 10 years ago, quite a Norfolk character!
Cheers
Richard
