How could you not like the HMR

love my HMR and 22lr, use them both for different jobs, shot many a group of rabbits with both calibers, never seen a split case only ever used Hornady V max, on my second outing i took a shot with the HMR and it sounded like nothing happened apart from the click of the trigger, i waited a minute then ejected the case to find it all still full of powder and knew something was wrong, took the bolt out and couldn't see daylight so did an internet search and found out i had a squib, had nothing to get it out with so hour back home to get my cleaning rod to poke it out, it now lives in my truck just incase, always inspect my bullets for splits, iv probably shot a good 3000 and not one split,
I check 50 last night before I set off. Not a single one in that box was split! Hornady.

Just like Smelly a few posts ago I hadn’t had the .17 out for a wee while so put it in the Jimny when I was going out with the sainted triple deuce to our shoot. On the way back I have a farm with a few rabbits so segued to it and took a walk on what was a surprisingly warm day.
Long short - three rabbits for three shots @ 57, 90 and 126yards and a joy to carry even with the Pard 007 on the back. The wee round really is laser-like and punches well above it’s weight - reminded me why I usually take neck shots with rabbits which you can do with confidence such is the accuracy.
The big surprise for me was the four grey squirrels I shot - spotted with the Axion and with some patience/shuffling and dancing on my behalf I was able to get the tree trunk as solid backstop each time. For me to see four never mind shoot one is a bit of a bonus - I think I have only ever shot one before! The wee round was very sore on two but I had to search hard for strikes on the other pair though all dropped to the shot. Good fun but I have an appointment with number 5 who moved round the back of the thick trunk every time I raised the rifle - it has to go - this is personal!
It still has it’s detractors but for me at least it was just another great day with the wee .17.

Been logging birch past two days but have been wanting a varminting session with the HMR.
It never disappoints, I even plinked it beyond 400yds and got seriously close!
Anyway, cleared some heads for the squirrels and took a rabbit I judged at 200yds but then talked myself into holding for 175 and lunged it. Just resting on a gate.

How can you not like a 17 HMR?

Absolutely - 4 bunnies for 4 shots this afty in v windy conditions @ 65-120 yds. Easypeasy!

Forgot to mention - I left a stunning pure black one alone - watched it for ten minutes from my hedgeline at one hundred yards. Think I may be getting soft….

PS
Is it just me or does anyone else immediately think of Gonville Bromhead (Michael Caine) in the classic Zulu movie when you write “at one hundred yards…..”?

love the round was out with mine earlier, use hornady through it mainly and federal 17gr shoots just as good.

CZ 453 Premium 22" fluted barrel engraved action & stock with a jeweled bolt. wildcat panther 17 mod w/ valiant 4-16x50 mil dot scope
and it works with pard add on 👌

great round to use day or night, shorter ranges or further away 👍

That's posh 😍

Well I went out today and the sling swivel broke!! Fortunately I caught the rifle but the end of the mod took a hit on the metalled road 😱.
It upset the zero but apart from a small scratch all is well.
A close shave with disaster it was!!

Love my Anschutz 1517 only frustration is the limited 4 shot magazine I have tried without success at trying to source an aftermarket high volume on, use it for rabbits with a Pard 008 and loading the mag in the dark is a fiddle

Been there done that Smelly - whole life flashes in front of you!
Was it the little bar snapped or just dislodged?

Love how this thread is still ongoing, I even got a like from a post I put on this time last year!

Fast forward to last week and I was out with the HMR again.

It was a still night and I was able to stretch the range out to 254yrds, had rabbits at 220 yrds, 205 yrds, and plenty more 100+ yards.

Fantastic little round

Filmed through the new Arken zulus with a dark sun IR onboard, obviously the image would be sharper if I messed about more with the focus and the IR.

There was some moisture in the air at some points and this showed in the arken as a light breeze on the grass but it's not

it's a really nice rimfire rifle poshest i've ever had trigger is superb, took some belter shots with the round over the years on rabbits and ground feeding grey squirrels,

I think it really is the 1 rimfire that covers everything you need it to do, like the 204 ruger is to cf foxing it's niche is in small vermin control,

22 wmr only edges it if you need a rimfire more for fox control on small places or noise sensitive areas,

i've seen you take some foxes with yours 👍 no doubt it will drop them in the right spot

Yep - great bunny basher though of course real men shoot them two at a time with the .17 - because they can…

I remember a rabbit clearance session a couple of years back, buddy had an anschutz and was getting frustrated with the four round mag and occasional feed issues. He thought I might have had an auto as he heard me rattling off shots from an adjacent field; but no, it was my trusty T bolt - you could rack that bolt in a hurry and ten shot rotary mag. Gave it away on here, hope the lad didnt just sell it on!!
