Out last night.

A chap of your tastes and kudos... A Weihrauch.
A 99 if you want to keep the weight down or a 57.
The 85 or 80.
The 77 and 97 are quite heavy but very accurate.
You will have a decent trigger in them.
Thanks Smelly - sage advice - .177/FAC?

Think I may have foiled an attempted HalAl slaughter visit, early hours I saw a blacked out van slowly coming up a lane in the distance, van stops, driver gets out, I'm thinking he's after a comfort break ... re think ... no lights on van?, individual spends a while looking over the fields towards my position, no hand held lamp, so he's obviously on thermal, next walks back down the lane a ways again stopping to look over the fields full of sheep with young, maybe he's checking out the Hare population (lots of them), gets back in the van & moves on slowly, turns down another lane that will take it across my front view, again stops & exits, but this time there are two, each with a long dog .. again no lamps so can't be the Hares can it?all the thirty or so sheep in that field are suddenly all bunched up tight in the corner nearest the lane gate.
I put a round into the ground in front of my motor facing their direction ...... no reaction from them ... second round same as, phoned the farmer's mobile & he came out pretty sharpish but lost a bit of time on his response, as he stopped to pick his son up from the other part of the farm, the van had scarpered just before the farmer got to the field but he found plenty of evidence of a possible attempt.

I haven’t been out on the foxes for a week and a half, it seems to be raining every time I reach for the 222 ☹️ . I am thinking of knocking the fencing business on the head and going into umbrella sales , I think there’s a market for them 😀👍🏻
I use xcweather.co.uk, it usually gets the gaps in the rain quite accurately.

no hand held lamp, so he's obviously on thermal
The last ones I encountered were the same, three of them with at least two dogs and one of them looked to be holding a thermal, I think they were after the deer. They didn’t see me as I approached them from their side but as soon as I put a light on them they vanished.

Went out last night for the first time in a while, work is rather an inconvenience isn’t it, and got my first fox of the year, the previous five outings being completely blank.
I saw it through the trees around a bend in the stream so up on the sticks and waited, eventually it appears out into the open and headed towards a pair of hares but wouldn’t stop. Let it trot along until about 70yds away and a quick Oi stopped it in its tracks side on and looking straight at me. A very small milky vixen, not sure I’m entirely comfortable with knowing I’m leaving cubs in the ground but the farmer still has ewes with newborns.

Didn’t see any more but quite a few roe about and doing quite a bit of barking, one solitary badger, I think they’ve been hit hard by you know who, lots of hares and a barn owl sat on a post right in front of me.

I also scored a magpie from the car window on my way up the track when I arrived.

Take your mod off next time.

This was one occasion (Couple weeks ago) when I remembered the "Foxy" button.
Complete miss from less than 50 yards!
Went back next morning with dog but nothing.

I shoot on a small farm and nearly always (Due to health mainly) shoot in the same field. Recently from the way Charlie is acting, when they appear I feel like I'm being sussed out nearly every time.
I'm not conspicuous but some (Not all) of them seem to look right at me when I'm thermaling.
Others definitely see the IR when the Zulus is fired up as they either change direction or leave quickly.
Sometimes I get lucky. 😉.
Thinking of giving the thermal sight a go, but really prefer NV for its versatility.
Anyone else have foxes spooked by ir?
Cheers, Ken.
You tried a 940 ken mate?

You tried a 940 ken mate?
No I haven’t.
What range will they illuminate out to?
I’ve just dedicated a gun to night shooting with a thermal sight, so see how that goes.
My back’s too painful to go hunting at mo. so grounded for couple or 3 days. 😱
Cheers, Ken.

Bugger... Caught one going around the lambs at 04:30 today. The wind encouraged me to close the gap.
It went into woods and I lost it.
Then it reappeared further away. Closed the gap, it's coming light slowly.
Lost it and then ended up being 50yds away from it.
Must of seen me as by the time got on it it was gone.
Bugger....
"Come in #25, your time is up"

At last a shootable night Friday, so many times I’ve gone out only to retreat to the van and watch the rain running down the windscreen.
Got a call last week than lambs were going missing and foxes were been seen often in daylight so although I don’t like shooting them this time of year but ..needs must. I have shot over 30 foxes 🦊 on this one permission and I thought I’d pretty much wiped them out ,well I haven’t so over the last week in between the rain I’ve had four 🦊 the first was as I was setting up my hide in broad day light only fifty yards away he kept appearing from the woods watching me,I walked back to the van picking up my gun and stuff then settled down when I noticed a heat source through my thermal coming from the wood then the shepherd came along on his quad bike checking the lambs as soon as he’d gone out trots Charlie ,stopped him with a “oy” at about 80 yards the 223 hornady vmax did the job . Unfortunately rain stopped play soon after.
So Friday night although there was slight drizzle and low clouds I set off 5-30pm . First I checked my zero on an obliging crow 180 yards , I love the effect the 223 Remington has on a crow …. Explosive.
I’m met up with the farmer, he informed me one of the ewes had died from a prolapse and he’d leave it there a while longer for fox bait for me. The magic hour arrived just on dusk I noticed through my thermal a fox making its way up the bank towards the lambs, he stopped on top of the bank and I must say a fine looking fox through my pard 008 in daylight mode bang flop dead . I then walked round, shot one towards the dead ewe And another in the adjoining field but although I hit it, I couldn’t find it as there was so many lambs and heat marks in the field ,that’s my excuse anyway.
I then noticed a heat source a little too far from a ewe , I was about 400 yards away up wind, I managed to get to within 210 yards away but no way any closer and could see clearly the fox was eating something I put the gun on my quod sticks took my time and let one fly that was number three ….or four . On inspection the big dog fox was halfway through a black lamb which didn’t look a newborn I took a photo and sent it to the shepherd but I think it’s a bit too graphic to post on here, even if I knew how to do it!🤔I then had another walk round to the other field, but so nothing decided to call it a night and head back towards the van and then thought no I’ll just have one last check at the other field and I could see the heat source of the Fox I’d shot but it just seemed wrong I looked through the pard 008 and there was eyes shining back at me and bugger me it was another finishing of what was left of the lamb so I got in the same position 210 yards away, took the shot completely missed it, but it ran stopped and then went back. The wind was gusting 30 to 40 mph by now, but I took my time aimed at the centre of the Fox and down he went . Number five, this was a vixen shot in the head🤔 well it was windy.
One of my best nights this year I thoroughly enjoyed it and hopefully I’ve made a difference, I’m gonna go back in a couple of days the dead ewe should attract any remaining foxes in,….. I’ll keep you posted

As Arnie said….i’ll be back.
Not a nice situation to have to deal with if it comes to confrontation!
Ken.
Ps. Perhaps getting soft in old age.
I do know a retired sheep farmer who told about catching a lad with a long dog on his land many years ago. In the farmers words he gave the lad a “Towelling”.
Wished I hadn’t bothered he said.
Someone came at night and cut short sections of his sheep netting out every so often. Left him with much repair work to do.

Often, with SD I get told files are too large to upload and I don’t know how to make them smaller with my phone.
The same files can upload to other forums no problem.
Is this because SD has a size limit for picture files?
Ken.
