Lantra Wild Game Meat Hygiene Assessment

I have been looking into taking my DSC1 soon and saw that BDS also offer an add on option of the Lantra Wild Game Meat Hygiene Assessment. Has anyone else done this? It says that this will allow me to ‘demonstrate to game meat dealers… that you ensure wild game meat is safe to enter the food chain’. It also says it is recognised by the FSA. I had been under the impression that DSC2 was generally what you needed to get trained hunter status for game dealers. If not then this seems like a much simpler way of being able to do this! Any experience from others would be great.

I asked the same in here when I did my DSC1 and the LANTRA assessment.

Thread 'trained hunter number - dcs1' trained hunter number - dcs1

Yes, you should do the LANTRA add-on, if it's offered.
The Large Game Meat Hygiene element is what you need in order to sell carcasses to a game dealer (AGHE). It used to be a standard part of DSC1, but has now been shifted (wrongly, imo) to DSC2.
If you do DSC1 + the LANTRA option, that's all you need.

Thanks everyone, that makes sense. It’s a worthwhile add on if it means you can sell carcasses on as needed. Great to be able to get the answer with proper experience from you all, always tricky to be sure for newcomers like me otherwise!

In my opinion a deer stalking course (DSC1) is pointless if you don't come away with a ticket that helps you move on any carcasses you create.
They should include a module to give you the knowledge to register as a food business too.

Most hunters spend a considerable time between DSC1 and 2, time when they could be shooting lots of deer and feeding people.

Removing the large game ticket was a money making device, nothing was broken before.

Following this thread, Can any one confirm like most of Lantras Coarses. If this needs to be refreshed every 5 years as best practice or is it a case of once you have your certificate and number you are fine?

Lantra courses are valid for life.

I just want to do the Lantra Large Game meat hygiene bit. Anyone know of a course?
Or want to get together and ask for one?
No interest in dsc1 or 2 or 3 or ptsd 1/2/3 or whatever.
Scroll down, and I think there's a place to enter your location to find a course provider near you.

(There are a few online providers offering cheap Game Meat Hygiene courses, but they appear to be just a basic level introductory course, not the Level 2 qualification that's required for trained hunter status).

Not sure which part of the country your in.
I was mentoring a young lad recently he did his DCS in Lancashire with the large game at the end.

Unless things have changed, which I am not aware of.
DSC1 does not contain the meat handling and hygiene certificate, and has not done so for about 2 years. If you take the DSC1 course you can pay the extra £90 and add this onto the DSC1 course. This is meat handling and hygiene cert Lantra approved.

The DSC1 course changed about 2 years ago, and you now achieve the meat handling and hygiene cert when you undertake and pass your DSC 2. This then proves to a greater extent that you are capable of cleaning and producing a carcass fit for the human food chain.

I think that's where my young friend got me confused.
There was a theory side at the end of his DSC1 but as you say you only get the full cert with level 2.

@sam84 I wonder if they could provide the certificate you require, maybe get together with @Buckaroo8 and others to sort a course? I couldn't see anything on their website though.
