Now that elk season has ended and spring has started to break, who decides to show up just in time to test the new fences?

This was early Friday morning and my usual stance this time of year is to leave them be in the hope that they will feel comfortable and return next year. But, not this year. First, I should say that this past season saw me out 81 days looking for these ladies with the luck of a man wearing an albatross necklace.

Not being one to look a gift elk in the mouth, the hunt was on (albeit with only a phone's camera). Long story short, my afternoon was well spent "play" hunting while I stalked the herd, lining up dozens of imaginary shots.

Most of the time the herd was within 2-300 hundred yards but I did manage 50-75 yards a few times which really got the blood moving. So, this day was only about the hunt and I'll take that most any day.

Here'a picture of something very curious to add.

I was just about out of battery but managed a poor shot of the herd's reaction to my neighbor starting up with a circular saw. They all turned immediately and moved in unison (like a flock of birds) towards the piercing ring of the saw. My thought is that the ring must have duplicated some familiar tones of a bugle.

Not to be a selfish hunter, as the light was fading, I stepped out of cover and tried to push the herd past my wife in the next pasture so that she could have a look.

Well, it didn't work. 75 percent of them spilled around and past me but a few moved to an area that she could at least see them leaving.

This is the few remainers as they crossed into Wyoming and presented a parting shot.

Its still pretty cold yet but all the white was from two days of freezing fog so thick you could swim in it.

If you happen to be anywhere near Ft. Collins let me know. Always happy to meet for a drink, a meal or even a day on our pocket gophers.

I won't be going that far south , for some reason I thought you were in Wyoming . I'll be in Cody for a few days then up to Montana to visit Muir . Thanks for the invite though , next time .

I will assume that you are visiting the Cody gun museum and recommend visiting the Irma Hotel. It was once co-owned by Buffalo Bill and has a stunning bar that was a gift from the Queen. The food is....well....edible, so maybe just a drink and look-around.

I`d bet it would be really good after a week packing a sack and rifle around in your ground MB.

Yep. Walk long enough and just about anything tastes better than hunger.

As for Wyoming cuisine, the only things local are beef and trout. Stick to those and you should fare well. I seem to recall that we had the rocky mountain oysters (bull fries) at the Irma.

I've been in the Irma Hotel on a number of occasions , great atmosphere , but you're right about the food . I will be going to the Museum to visit an old friend who is one of the curators there . It's basically a " winters over " road trip . My cousin and her husband are coming over from the UK for a few weeks so I'm taking them through BC , then western Montana , through Yellowstone , out through Cody and then up to Billings and Hardin , Montana and back up home from there . It's beautiful country with a lot of good people , I'm looking forward to it .
