I doubt your going to get anyone willing to give up their time for your mates.

Unfortunately if you can't do that yourself, then they will struggle.

Your obviously already 'out there' so see what you can do your end first. As you say it's about getting your foot in the door. Yours is already in there.

hi all!!not a rant just want to know why is it so hard to get into stalking or should I say getting out there!!!you have all your tickets and more but no doors open?the reason I ask is that a few friends are finding it very hard to get onto the stalking seen {thats the way I put it} deer are a problem everywhere and just thought more guns and certificates the better but no!!there finding it hard to get out?it seems like no right away?give a chance?yes not all are up to it but taking under wing comes to hand!show them teach them!but its dosent seem to happen its usually a no or no chance.has anyone else come across this?I know all are not like this but seems to happen a lot {WHY} if someone is keen to go out and help and learn why is it a problem??really frustrates me sometimes.
!JUST WANTING TO KNOW WHY! MORE HAND S THE BETTER!
SEEMS TO BE A CLICK IF THE FACE DOZENT FIT NO CHANCE!
REGARDS SWARO
I think people might start in reverse as they just want to shoot deer (I get that) but I have seen so many posts with people starting out with no experience on deer. I know a lad and taken him out (nice lad but not interested in rabbits/foxes)
The old saying you need to learn to walk before you can run is quite true, People do most things from the beginning
ride a bike learn to drive lay bricks first job (apprentice) then get experience...you don't join the army as a sniper you learn...

But they seem to by-pass it with deer which I find very strange as a discipline such as stalking it is a very steep hill to climb.

how you supposed to learn!take under wing step by step!you can soon tell if the person is keen and willing to learn

One of the items missing now is a lack of people wanting to show someone the ropes and guide an individual to eventually pick up some shooting irrespective of what discipline whether it’s ferreting, wildfowling, pigeon shooting or deer stalking.
Dinosaurs way ( this is me) to get shooting is by trust and involvement in any sporting pastime which in time does lead to shooting being available
Now as things move on, money and attitude has greatly changed that old way and people just pay up to shoot without doing the dinosaurs way of earning it

Like wise there is now a lot of fear of losing your permission on some land once you’ve found it and probably paid for it, so there goes any chance of a guest invite or helping out, there are still people who offer that but it is now a very low number compared to a few years back, stalkers in some quarters are very guarded and keep themselves to themselves which is fine, their choice - but when you ask them why, most will tell you a tale of lost shooting due to blah blah it -it a cautionary damper on things

Then there’s the old what tickets you got, experience, insurance etc etc, that on its own cuts out a huge amount of stalkers getting permission, purely due to landowners or lease holders conforming to H&S, insurance requirements or here say on what’s required in the hurried up involvement stalking has taken on the past few years

Some of it due to landowners trying to eek a profit out of woodland etc which is ok they didn’t buy it to make a loss, just over the past 5 years stalking has changed so much, if you grown up with changes you are fine with it, try and get into the permission bit now is not without difficulty without some paperwork

My advice would be to keep asking, knocking on doors, get involved, volunteer talk to people offer up as a spare pair of hands gradually get some paperwork behind you and keep looking for someone to take you under their wing

The dinosaur approach is a lot slower but you learn as you go and a door will open for you, don’t give up, steady eddy is the best way,

Good luck

Pretty naive without being rude.

People who don’t pay for stalking work hard to get it and to keep it.
Taking someone out , showing them about and how to best stalk the land is a big ask
Think how you’d feel when they offer your landowner 2k a year for your stalking ?

They rest is folk that pay for it , and why would the take someone out for free for the sake of it.
Someone they know perhaps but some random Joe who’s “ keen”

“Keen” is every stalker without stalking

And before you ask. All my stalking is free , I’ll never pay to shoot deer, and yes I’ve taken folk out to shoot a beast.

would it not be satisfaction in training someone or inexperienced stalkers thats my view

It would be fair to say a lad/lass going for a mechanics job then they would have been working on their own car/moped helping their Dad/Uncle.
I learn to scuba dive but learnt how to swim first! Not rock up for dive lessons and find out there is a swimming test lol

So money then .

It’s always been that way

I’ve had this same discussion many times on here .
It’s not what I’d have but it’s the facts .

Colin br is not about my friends its all these people struggling to get experience and to get out there thats all

I’ve taken many many people out shooting showing them the ropes from wildfowling, ferreting, pigeon shooting, foxing and of course all the elements of deer stalking including gralloching L1 and L2 helped with everything, gear, even given some permissions because that’s was how I learnt, from people who wanted to pass on their knowledge to me because they knew I was up for it and they knew me and what I wanted, that has pretty well all gone these days except probably for your own kin.

As previously written - keep plugging away, getting experience where you can, communicating showing your interest and something will pop up

there's my point!!
The other side of the coin is people coming into stalking appear simply not wanting to start at the foundation end, which for many is ferreting (years of it) a.177 then .22 then a .410 (years of that)
Also what you may not understand many people simply can't take a second person out with a rifle as landowners don't want it...(Fact)

I remember many years ago seeing a lot of pigeons on a laid wheat field, followed the land back to a farm house knocked on the door and said I have seen a lot of pigeons on your wheat field I can go tomorrow if you like.
Yes ok but don't leave your empty cartridges around! Shot 60 took a picture, then got to shoot the foxes then the deer but it took 3 years to get the deer... :tiphat:
farmers like it when you shoot a lot of pigeons2a.webp
