Where is you're dog when out stalking?

I let my GWP wander in front of me, not far just a couple of meters where I can read his reactions to ground and air sent, this gives me an indication that we are close to deer, you get to read the dogs body language. He will stop and turn to look for me when he picks up the scent just to make sure I’m paying attention and ready to do my bit.

Always with me and I wouldn't dare go stalking without him now.

He makes it all the more worthwhile.

I let him go ahead maybe 10-15 yards in an area where he has better senses (even more so than the thermal), or I'll have him at heel when we are coming up on a known area for deer.

Where is your dog when out stalking? Do you have it at heel or allow it to work around infront, albeit fairly close? I'm stalking typical scottish borders forestry blocks with my cocker in her 2nd season working and while I try to keep her at heel, will a little more freedom do any harm?

At home or in the van, she is not a stalking dog, she is a tracking dog.

At heel but loosely, ideally sort of half her body length ahead of me so I can see her easily. Not too worried if she’s a couple metres ahead either when she’s trying to figure something out either, she comes back in once we are stalking on.

The dogs hearing will be effected if it walks in-front or further in front . Mine walks LHS heel its back ribs on my LHS . Better for his hearing yet still able to get a clear air from any hidden deer . I am keeping this one on leash or tracking line when searching at present as yet he hasn't tackled a mobile deer so i want to know he has the good senses to not wade right in and get himself injured
This is only my third deer dog so still learning and they are all different

Mine have all sort of come back in behind when taking the shot. I had a lab who used to come and sit under the sticks as soon as you put them up and my current lab tucks in behind - they figure it out pretty quick when you shoot a few over them

I posted a couple of videos here to show my Teckel and Vizsla’s usual stalking positions - approx a metre to the rear. Both stop when I do to glass/thermal and if a turn around to scan behind me, the vizsla shuffles position to stay behind me. Something I never trained her to do but she just started doing it. Personally, I love to have them with me and watching the Vizsla air scent a deer is often the first clue of a deer I’ve failed to spot. I wouldn’t be without them 🤗

but I left the little f###er in the Hilux once
I dont blame him, that really is a schitt camo pattern lol.

Dog? Forward scout, its why we feed them, they are the advance guard and should work ahead within the distance parameters as set by the owner.

The dog should be free ranging, not at heel (unless commanded) and definitely not on a lead when deerstalking/hunting.
The dog should also be taught with a hand signal to stop and stay whilst the hunter goes forward to take a possible shot.
One not to deafen the dog, two so as to not spoil the stalk.

How can you see the vizsla air scenting a deer if she is behind you? A meter in front would be off use😊👍
When I’m moving, they are behind me. when I stop and glass, they are inevitably under my feet. Before moving off I always look at both dogs and particularly the Vizsla especially if it’s taking the air scent. Simples 🤗

Mines only young coming up for 15 months, he’s either on slip lead clipped to belt, homemade Stalking style lead and now trying him on a long line clipped to belt .
He’s way keen and strong so all about keeping him obedient and steady , the scenting, tracking and indicating is all very natural for him so far and he’s doing well on that, just need to reign him in, wouldn’t be without him .
