.260. Best twist rate and factory ammo circa 140 grn

Guys.
Seriously looking for a change to a single rifle use for stalking etc

Pretty well settled on a .260

Any guys on here using one for target and or stalking

Possible twist rate 1:8 is that the best rate
Barrel length ?

Prefer something like 140 grn factory ammunition if this is available

I have 243, 6.5 and 308 at the moment which could be used for a new barrel donor

Any info greatly appreciated

Cheers

Phil
Get a .270 Phil as the have been around for close to a 100 years with the younger .260 being a mere pup in the cartridge world. Yes it must work but over that amount of time every avenue of .270 development has been covered

This really is the more sensible option, and if you can’t live with the creedmoor, (we should all just get over it by now, all the hyperbole aside it’s really very good) what about a swede? Generally plenty of factory ammo available and just a touch better than the creed or .260 should you wish to reload. With some bullets you can start to get quite close to prc performance.
I’m still using a swede, the barrels getting quite rough now, but still shoots. Having thought I’d change to a prc I now think when the time comes for a rebarrel I’ll stick with a swede, have all the brass and equipment I’ll ever need.
I shoot both, creed and swede, have done for a while now, nothing between them. At some point when the swede barrel gives up it’ll get a 6.5x55AI barrel which will give it a little edge.

I shoot a 260 rem i had it done 1-7.5 twist , its shoots 100 grain lead fine and 100 copper 120 copper also 140 lead also just fine . The 260 has a little advantage with lighter bullets in the loading . Factory ammo ? You just dont see it much but it can be had but not to the extent you can drop in at a gunshop and just pick it up . Brass is easy to form from 308 down to 243 . Your better having a faster twist than too slow a twist at the end of the day and when it was built we knew nothing much about copper , as it shoots 100 grain lead varmint bullets up to the extra longs i guess all is good .

My .260 has an 8.5 twist in a 26 inch Lilja (3 groove) barrel and easily copes with 139gn Scenars. A reasonably 'soft' load gives me a comfortable 2800 fps and is very accurate.
Have to agree that the .260 really is for hand loading only but, if that works for you, it is (IMHO) an excellent round.

My first CF was a Rem 260, lovely round, did all my deer stalking with it, accurate and hard hitting out to 300yds (my personal limit) I hand loaded and enjoyed the time spent doing it.

I’ve probably loaded more rounds for a Crudmoor then 90% of the Uhm people that own one . And while it is in fact a very nice cartridge I’ve never seen the need to change from the 260 . I’ve come close more than a few times to purchasing one as I’m quite fascinated with most all 6mm , 6.5mm and 7mm cartridges ? But every time I’ve come close to buying one some wanna be weekend warrior comes in the shop extolling the u realistic mythical virtues of the cartridge and I don’t care to be associated with a person like that . The 6.5 Grendel folks kinda turned me off as well . But I mess with this stuff every day and twice on days ending in Y so I suppose I’ve become jaded . Let’s just say I don’t get excited like a person that touches their own firearms a couple times a month .

To be honest I can’t get wrapped up with excitement either with any deer caliber, over the years my deer calibres have stayed the same 222 243 6.5 ( swede) and 308 ( some say that’s boring) and have been fortunate to be able to continually use them all on a regular basis as work or sporting.

My go to rifle has always been linked to using the calibre matched to species shooting I guess most have seen the muntjac shot in the shoulder with a 308 153 grn round at either 25 or 150 yds half the time you can only realistically use the back legs.

I’m looking / committed to get a single calibre , I’ve shot a little more than a few boar from a high seat with the 308 not looking to continue with that unless it’s to try driven which I decided to try and do, then covid turned up to curtail that with immediate effect
Ammunition I have re loaded in the past, including the above 6 CF calibres including the 204 and 22 hornet isn’t an easy task to keep accurately topped up, so I eventually went all factory ammunition based purely on time available
That’s it - now where’s that perfect calibre 😂 😵‍💫

1 in 8 twist will cover all bullets for any 6.5. 20” is great for hunting , definitely wouldn’t go any more than 22” unless you had a magnum calibre.

260 rem is an amazing choice for hand loaders , 6.5 creedmoor for factory ammo
