Is there a max bullet weight you'd try in a 223 1:8 twist

Worked up a load in my Bartlein 1:8 23" with excellent results, never went heavier, and hits with authority on Mr Foxy

There is a lot of different ammo out today lead and copper and some specials that likely wont feed or fire safely in all rifles. Some will need faster than 1-8 even etc to get the best . My 1-12 223 runs most stuff fine but is not just quite right with Barnes 50 grain tTSX copper yet ok with Barnes Ecx .
You really need to test as always in any rifle

I have shot the 90grain smk out of a 24” 1-8” twist tikka with success out to 1000yrds.
It **** well but was not ideal as to get suitable velocity’s it was hard on the brass.
I would say anything up to 80 grain is ideal.
Consider the shape at 90 grain your going to face seating deeper to cycle from the mag with many rifles or your seating into the rifling .

I had a mossberg mvp in 5.56 with a 1 in 9 twist. Handled 77 scenars very well.
I never did check whether it actually was a 1 in 9.
But the bullet that always shot well out of it was the 69gn smk almost regardless of suitable powder and charge.
Which seems to shoot well out of any 223 with the aforementioned twist.

May I ask what seating depths you've tried? Think I'm at a 80thou jump with good results

25.8 g N140 2950fps
Load at col 1.962 10 though off lands.
GRT data suggests best nodes are 20 and 100 thou off lands. That's with 24.6 grn N140

my go to bullet in my sako 75 (1-8'') 18'' barrel was the 75gr amax , it handled the 80 grain version as well , in fact it handled anything from 40gr to 80gr acceptably well but really shone with 69gr plus , the only issue was the mag length with the heavy bullets as mine was an action 1 which was delightful but short in the mag for the longer bullets

Yes, apologies but wasn't wanting to call that much attention to your level of comprehension.
Am I getting ‘trolled’?! Good job I don’t get hurty feelings. It doesn’t really matter, as we all know one end of a round from the other… but I’ll try to use the correct terminology in future if it offends members.
Good luck to the OP in finding that ideal load, rest assured you’ll have fun either way.

I knew what you meant, thank you

Not getting trolled, just someone pointing out correct terminology

Hi all,

So just got my Tikka T3X and want to look at loading a few different rounds.
So far I have 53gr and 55gr VMAX but wanted to try some heavier bullets.

So have had a look and my conclusion so far is:-
Will handle lighter weights i.e. 40gr
Would handle (possibly benefit) from heavier bullets 60-75gr

But is there a point of diminishing returns or a weight that's too heavy?
Really depends on barrel twist rate and your intended use. If its a traditional 1 in 12” 55gn probably optimum. Driven fast they will pretty much point and shoot to 250m.

If you have a faster twist 1 in 8” you can shoot longer 65 to 70gn bullets. They will have a higher BC so less affected by wind and better on targets out at longer ranges.
