I was told deer damage but I don’t think so

FFS,…. 🙈 Hylobius abietis, aka, large pine weevil.
they eat the bark of the young trees causing death of tree, a complete ball ache to get rid off, look closely at the tree stem 😳😳
Your eyes must be better than mine as I can’t see that damage from the pics but can see the scorched vegetation around the tree hence the suggestion of overspray being the culprit

Or are you thinking this lesion on the bark? (Didn’t see that until zooming in)

Beat me to it, also suggest weevil, look for stem scarring inch or two up from ground.
The trees look like they’ve been dead longer than the vegetation in photos so not sure overspray is the issue.

The little ****ers strip bark round the stem killing the tree, they’ve been deed fur a while by look of it, needles fall aff making ground look like it’s been sprayed, not many approved pesticides these days fur them, so most just replant and hope fur best.
Warmer winters to blame I suspect, and causing ££££££££ particularly on the west of Scotland 🏴

Look at the other vegetation - all shrivelled
Poison for sure

Was this planted on a clear fell, and was it left a good 3-5 years to get rid of weevil, or was it replanted (too) quickly on poor soil ?

Hi guys
I was asked to inspect a plantation and told they have lost 75% of the trees to deer. Threats of bringing in contractors were made…. To be clear there are some deer and some grazing damage but sheep have been getting in as I have been saying for a year or so….. anyway on inspection there were lots of dead trees which seemed to have just died without any grazing pressure. It almost looked like the grass weed killer spray had killed the trees??? I dunno but not deer as the trees were complete. What’s killing the trees???

Definitely weevil. Ask them if they planted treated trees and carried out top up spraying.

I have photos of the sheep incursion which has now abated after two years. There is about two deer left in that corner both doe’s so I’m leaving them at the moment…. I would say about 5-7% deer or sheep grazing pressure 60% overspray it’s annoying to get the blame for the lot. I’m in communication with the forestry manager so we shall see

Or Beaver!
Think that post was tongue in cheek. 😘
Ken.

I've lost three privet/box bushes in the front garden and the culprit seems to have been a catterpiller infestation.
Box moth catipillar is spreading rapidly, it leaves affected plants looking like skeletons. My guess is that in the next few yrs box (buxus) will disappear from our gardens.

The moths that have hatched out in my van don't resemble the description, about 12mm head to tail and chocolate brown.

In which case, whoever did the spraying should have reported the damage. So if the live trees have the same kill off around the base as the dead ones, you may well be right.
