The best fly rod ever???

Bruce and walker Hexagraph, I love the 6/7ft ones although some hate em! Sadly they no longer make rods as they cannot find the staff!! Hardy Sintrix glass 6ft 2/3weight, fantastic little brook rod that is great fun with little brownies but can handle the big ones if you find one.

A new rod won’t correct poor technique and won’t make anyone a great caster. Better to spend some money on a lesson and practice. A fast action rod might be a great casting tool but not a dry fly river rod because they are too stiff to protect light tippet. A medium fast rod - like the SLT or LL is the best compromise.
It’s astonishing how much better my old rods have become now that my casting has improved…

The nicest rod that I have ever cast was a Temple Fork Outfitters Axiom in 7 weight. Cannot find one for love nor money.

However, I did find a TFO Lefty Kreh special in 5 weight. It's a dream to use and has account for over a thousand fish so far!

Many years ago when visiting Rigby's in Pall Mall I looked in the window of Hardy's. On display was a split came travelers rod with its leather tube case. I have no interest or knowledge about fly fishing but that little rod was a absolute thing of beauty. I could easily have had that on display as a peice of art.

Sage XP, I have a 6Wt and I also have my late Father's 7Wt. I have my late Mother's 5Wt Orvis which is a nice rod too. For the salt I have a Bloke rod which is great too.

Funnily enough, got a lovely Sage Accel which I'm scared to use as it's all shiny (and expensive).....so just go back to using my battered and bruised Orvis Western2 for day to day use and my old Smuggler if I'm doing a bit of wandering in the hills..

Best Rod I have a #3 brook rod by Hardy my go to kit it casts like a swallow kissing the water a real delight to use and punches well above its weight

All the rest are Orvis, lovely balanced work horse rods and reels in all weights

Ohh and B&W salmon rod purchased a lifetime ago in Scotland never had a need to replace it, so very well made 👍

One of my old favourites was an Orvis Trout Bum 7’ 4wt. Loved that thing! Sold it to make cash when in need. Man, miss it!

The Trout Bums were superb. I had a 6’ 2wt Superfine. Absolutely wonderful rod for small burns, and it was a 4 piece so rather ‘discrete’ for those less than entirely authorised locations.

Sadly stolen a few years back. Of the 9 rods stolen, it’s the one I miss the most.

In my opinion there are casting poles and fishing rods. I’ve owned many of the top brands and models and although whilst competition fishing I used Sage XPs and Bloke XL fairly fast actioned rods, I felt that I was losing too many fish by ripping hooks out and converted to rods with a more through action, more forgiving on soft mouthed fish. I now use a Winston biit in 9’ 4wt as my main dry fly rod, I’ve also had Sage SP and SL which are also very nice in the action. I also like Fulling Mill Gold for the heavier line weights. The fastest action rod that I know have is a Loop S1 in 9’ 5wt for heavier dry fly and small still waters, I also use it for sea trout with no problems unless trying to chuck a big snake or tube. I buy all my rods second hand for under £300 as I can’t justify the cost of a new one.

That’s what I have
