Why you should never calculate the price of your shot...

Well, it's that time of year again, and I am required to head North, to Blair Atholl for a wee competition shoot.

Not really a target shooter, but having bought a decent rifle, it seemed a shame not to 'stretch' it, and see what it can do: and so I periodically, have a go at lobbing lead, at small targets a very long way away.

The days of doing these trips in one hit, are much like this year's Easter Egg.

Long gone.

Consequently, I tend to stop over in Cumbria - a beautiful part of the world.

So a gentle two days driving, and I find myself back on one of the most scenic (if unforgiving) ranges in the UK.

More than once, we are 'buzzed' by pairs of these, screaming up the Glen...

I smile inwardly, as I recognise that I will have T-shirts older than the pilots.

Three days of shooting and I fired off just over 100 rounds of .308 (108 for anybody with OCD).

As always, shooting long range is a rollercoaster and the wind at Blair Atholl will crush a man's ego in a heartbeat.
Fortunately, I do not have an ego - which is just as well really.

At the local Camp site (speaking of which I passed the Appleby Horse Fair, on the way home - if you have not seen it, that is Biblical), one of the parking areas was conned off. Here's why...

Just for sh**ts and giggles, I totted up what this wee trip cost me. Just accommodation and fuel, I reckon it costs about £8.50 per shot.

If I had known that, then perhaps I would have tried harder to hit the bloody target.

Still, nothing nicer than 'taking stock' in the B&B pub on the way back.

It's not just the shooting, it's not just the stalking, (or golf or fly fishing), it's where it takes you.

It's only money, and as someone else once said...

What was the cost of your shots from your last trip to Africa also are you doing a write up?

Great write up. What rifle, scope and ammunition were you using? What were you shooting at, and at what distances?

AI AX rifle.
S&B PMII Scope.
155gr GGG ammuniton.

Tiny targets, far far away...

Monday was 400, 500 & 600 yards.
Tuesday was 900 & 1,000 yards.
Wednesday was 500 & 600 yards.

Very nice setup there. I approve of Landrover as well. Mine is currently sorned awaiting welding after a failed MOT, but that's another story...

I've heard good things about GGG. I must try some in mine.

The only caveat with GGG, is if you want to reload them.

It is possible to break an 'unbreakable' de-primer with them.

Ask me how I know...

I will not be reloading with this brass.🤬

Looks great fun. Not wishing to black cat your costs however I was at Short Range Heavy Bullet at Bisley yesterday. The 6 rounds in 25 seconds cost about £65 for some of the chaps shooting factory DG ammunition. My reloaded 9.3 x74R is about £10!

The lads at work used to have a phrase "Two Shedding".

"What does that mean?"

"If you tell Mr X, you have a shed, he will tell you he has two".

Always made me grin.

I almost managed to meet up with a member on here (@bowji john) on one of those days, it sounds tremendous fun.

I had not given that a thought (sensible), but as you have mentioned it...

I promise I have not fiddled the figures. I know what it cost, and I know how many shots I took (15).

It equates to £666 per shot.

Now you tell me whether that is a coincidence or not...

Heading close to Blair Atholl myself this week though I am after deer (hopefully at much shorter distances) so I shall defo not be doing a cost per shot calculation, particularly as the sainted Lady FB has been known to read these posts.
Anyhoo, The Three Lemons (!) just over the hill and a scenic drive to Aberfeldy is well worth a trip for dinner and won’t inflate the Buck for your Bang costings too much…

I think this post is quite informative to anyone coming in to the sport.

Yes, you have those who have free stalking, however anyone who wants to do “bit” of target shooting on the side needs to realise that travelling to ranges and even the cost of ammunition itself quickly adds up. Especially the PRS competitions. Attending one of those events can easily be a £400 weekend with the price of entry and ammunition before you consider accommodation.
