Wet days dont make me laugh Bob your comment is choice to say the least.

You can try to bend and distort the rules/ guidelines as much as you like but those guidelines are put in place to give credability to the system , anyone ducking and diving isnt going to help one bit.
Why would I need to become an active AW I have enough on my plate looking at what comes across my desk on a regular basis trying to keep you boys on track:???:

Gentlemen this does not help the credability of the system. It is not just culling 3 deer, it is ensuring the candidate is competant enough in all aspects of stalking. And believe me I have met some that will never make it, and many that will walk it without any problems. The critera is there in black and white for AW's and common sense needs to be applied as well.

Willie Gunn i did not mean to say what you were doing was in correct or wrong and as it is your system is great. What i was saying ,There are people out there that would never have need to spend the amount of cash they have on stalks with you had the system not been in place. I take people out stalking and some are happy to come out and pay money for a stalk. But there are others who do not want to pay for a stalk with me but will do so just to get through the DMQ 2 paperwork.
My point Paul is this there is no AW out there that i have spoken to that has agreed with the 3 stalk system it is one to many and should be changed. It would help bring the assessment in line with all other assessments / Tests.
If you cannot decide that the person you are assessing has the required skills in one successful stalk then you really should not be doing the job. Lets get away from the paperwork a minute because that is only proof that you the AW thought the Lev 2 Candidate had the skills necessary. Then you need to do it again and again. Putting your first assessment under question and then your second .

Just to be clear, did you really mean that people are paying you (RTA) for stalking "just to get through the DMQ 2 paperwork"?

Yes some of the chaps i take out would never have paid any one to go stalking had it not been for the need for LEV 2 certificates. Most of there own ground not having many deer on it or being FC ground would not in there opinion have been suitable ( LACK OF DEER). So they had to pay me to come out on my ground. Not a lot of money but money they would have preferred to keep for them selves .
Malcolm i understand what you are saying and that is not really the job of DMQ 2 assessment or the AW,s who assess the set standard. If a person comes out with me to get assessed then he had better already be at the standard or he is only waisting his own time and money. I still think if some one is at the required standard then 3 stalks is to many and for some can be very costly. Its just an opinion i feel strongly about and if it is not discussed it will never get changed. At this moment there are discussions going on at the very highest level in the deer sector about the required competencies to stalk deer in Scotland. It might be an idea to let the legislators know how we feel . Or they might just put a new qualification through that is a step to far.

Hmmm driving instructor ehh!! hope you are not who I think you are ;)

I am well aware of the criteria that an AW has to adhere to, and having stalked for over 30 years and managed ground north and south of the border, and still do it does not take long to see who is up to the grade and who is not when it comes to taking their Level 2>

Stuart, I see that axe you have to grind against DMQ hasn't dulled atall, even considering your involvement in the system.

This thread has the potential to be a good one, and a telling warning to those undertaking the qualification.

You have detracted from it though, with your petty online jousting with Davie. Perhaps you could save it for the hunting life forum, because it really is getting pretty monotonous.

Reading this with interest. I have a lad, stalker for 40 years invited me up to cull deer and witness last february. I used a dictaphone for the Q/A and typed it up on the PC using the DMG headed paper as I always do to make it legible and professional

Turns out he could not afford to register till October when he got tips from the stags. So he posts it to me and I fill it in. What is wrong with that??

We live in the real world and these lads are not on big money. He has forgotten more about deer than I will ever know and it was embarrasing asking some of the questions. However, the rules are there and to obtain the award we went over the procedure. no shortcuts.

Rules and best practice are guidelines and common sense is invaluable.

Did you know that you can use an ILA grant worth £200 to register for level 2 for free? Barony accept that and North Highland might too. You qualify for the grant if you earn less than 22k and live in Scotland, simples!
 
so I've probably repeated the same stuff at the same people pretending to be othe people on the same subject that disagree with the DMQ system who get banned and come back back. Bloody hell, it would be nice if we could have some sort of verification system for members to stop random alias accounts coming into play down the line that can be used to play against people too.

Well Paul we do try to moderate the site as closely as possible, and sooner rather than later any banned member will show up again as we do have a number of ways of checking.

I wouldnt let it bother you to much as they tend to have little or no impact on this site.

Well, well, well...I can't make up my mind whether I wasted all my time reading all of these posts or bothering to write this one but let's face it lads and lasses, the DMQ system and qualifications L1 and L2 are here to stay. Financial arrangements between candidate and witness are nobody's business but their own, but I would advise any prospective candidate to check all costs prior to any outing. If you're not happy, then find another witness...there's plenty out there (but time is cheap when it's yours).

As for the 3 AW stalks, personally, I can't see the problem if you have the ability and you're competent, the system should offer no challenge. I personally take my hat off to all AWs. Without them there would be far less opportunity for L2 candidates (paid or not) and all witnessing would possibly have to be done by assessors only, creating its own problems.

The system is fine, but not if you wish to fight it! (Obviously a few do)

As for AWs who don't do things by-the-book, I'm sure over time they will fall by the wayside as did industry-credible witnesses.

Just my thoughts...I wish you all well.
