Calibre for this shot?

Aye a breeze for that calibre if one has one.

Yes I reckon the 130 might be a little light for a heavyweight stag as he is at 500 but will leave that to the ballistic guru`s.

Unfortunately with the way of the land and the way of the sambar combined he may never be seen again for a next day shot.

I actually stuffed up as when I first saw him with head in the ground cover I thought he was 'just a young un' and never tried to get in tight. It was later when he got a whiff that peed me off as I could have reduced the distance quite a bit. I videoed him feeding then heading for the bush to where I snapped the stills.

The 300 Rum and the .338 excel in the OP scenario, the rest in good hands will do the job. I was positive that the .308 Win and 30-06 be mentioned and surprised that they weren't. I reckon both be ok if everything was aligned.
So, did you get him on the deck?

Just an aside. You meant chambering not calibre. Odd. As I know you shoot bullets. Not heads John

I am fairly sure that the astute denizens of the SD are acutely aware of what my op is all about cobber...but then a few are referencing red deer anecdotal evidence. The stag in the op is a very different animal and warrants a hard hitter with a proper projectile. Btw for others there is only one head in this story and it's on the stag. Hardy ha ha

I can hit a four pint milk carton at 1000 yards. Roughly 4 inches across. Can I do it every time? Definitely not! But,when I do miss,it's only by a few inches. So,in reply to your original post,I'm pretty sure I could kill that samba with a 148-160 grain bullet in 6.5. Not legal where you are,but it would still do the job.

P.s this has been witnessed,as has most of my long range kills. Just because you live in Australia,it doesn't mean you have the monopoly on shooting animals of size! Granted, you have a lot of non-native invasive species which most of us will never come across. For regular 500 yard plus shots on game animals, the top 7mm loadings give the the best of all worlds.

7mm loadings
been using my own 7mm RM rifle on them for over 40 years, I do know a little about it.

My original post mentions no 6.5`s as below but I also knew that some would disregard the OP guidelines.

Take note that under our hunting laws the minimum calibre for sambar is .270 Winchester, thus no 6.5`s and .243`s

Just because you live in Australia,it doesn't mean you have the monopoly on shooting animals of size!

As if I need to be advised of the above, there has been no suggestion otherwise....oh yes there are far far bigger animals here than Sambar deer btw. Some three to four weight sizes bigger.

As I said in my previous post,6.5 mm aren't legal in Australia. No willy waving going on here! As my relatives live in Australia, and have been visited, they know the score.
