ACM, You have had lots and lots of suggestions and options listed above, but unfortunately none of them are the right one. Bring it bang up to date ! What you need is a fancy new chassis for it. If you chose the right path I could take your old stock off you just to keep things tidy in your gunroom !

My current go to is 80grn Nosler out of a straight 243. Foxes to Fallow, it does the lot, if I do my bit
I just chopped my own .243 from 25” to 20”, thats a remington varmint profile 8 twist phoenix barrel. Going to wear an Alpex 4k LRF and shoot 87gn vmax driven by N160. Wasnt at all concerned about loss of velocity. Had a few 20” .243”s over the years, but never a fast twist on. Any 6mm with a fast twist would be great on that rifle. .243 would save you a variation. Chopping a few inches off and having a proper crown done might also improve accuracy, it certainly wont hurt as long as the bore is good at the chop point.
I should add, Im also very fond of the 6xc, the reason for chopping the .243 is that i sold the 6xc i had put together. 6 creed with small rifle primers would also be a good choice.
@Acm why dont you chop the current barrel to 20” to test the handling, then you can decide later on a new barrel/cartridge if you like the shorty version.

Agreed, it looks anaemic on paper, but energy doesn’t kill, shot placement does, hence why you could shoot it in the wrong place with a win mag and it will run like hell, but a well pleased .22 would kill any deer.
4 more with it this morning, solid blood trail on a chest shot pricket than ran out in some spring barley. Hornady cx is a great bullet!!

Energy does kill.
It kills better when the shot placement is good I agree.
Energy won't forgive terrible shot placement for sure. But it can make up for marginal shot placement. We should all be striving for perfect shot placement- but if we shoot enough deer- eventually one of them will be marginal and the extra ft lbs will help a bit.
If you're shooting lead free I can understand why you want speed- to help that firm copper expand at greater ranges.
Anyway- you have lots of options. I would liken your 75 in 243 to a semi classic car. Perhaps a Porche 928 with a smaller engine. Everyone butchered them at one point- turned them into track slags and ruined them. Everyone wanted the 911 and the 928 was never a proper porsche.
Now people cringe at how many 928s have been ruined and its slowly developing a following. It will never be an air cooled 911- much like your 75 will never be an absolute classic - but it's becoming more appreciated over time.
What goes around comes around. And a largely unmolested 75 in 243 with a barrel shortened for a mod will be a lovely thing to own- and butchered 75s in trendy calibres with tactical stocks will be all over the place
Based on your success this morning- it sounds like all it needs is to be shorted a wee bit

What is your load data mate? And out of interest why the 87grn v max over say the 90grain eldx or the new eld-vt ?
44gn n160, set just back from lands using a sharpie to see when i was not touching. Not measured COAL. New lapua brass first time shot. Es 16, sd 6.
Why vmax? Just fancied using them. Did consider 70gn nosler bt.

Not yet mate, you know the feeling, you can’t decide the right thing to do, so perhaps it’s best to do nothing for now? Most likely wants a faster twist .243 barrel spun on. Makes sense for factory ammo and licensing, and will keep up with a 6mm creed nicely then.

Chop it down Andy....my foxing set up is a .243 24" t3 varmint with a jetz.
It's a tack driver but a shite to lug about. I'd chop it when funds allow.
