Which shall I have a new Gary Cane stock for?

When my mum passed away last year I put some money down on a Gary Cane stock to remember her by. It is something she would have approved of - a uk craftsman made item of utility that at the same time is a completely unnecessary indulgence and will be a thing of beauty that will see me through and eventually will be passed to my son if we are still allowed guns. And if not it can be made into a lamp.

I knew which rifle it was going to go on, but since then I’ve acquired a Heym sr20 Stutzen and had my 7mm rm, which until then was scrap, rebarrelled.

As a bit of fun, and also to help my thought process, which gets the new stock? I have a plastic fantastic 243 with nv anyway, and cf2 270 (which was very cool) has a new home.

6.5x55 husqvarna 1900 screw cut but otherwise as it left the factory and in very nice condition, super accurate.
7x57 Heym sr20 Stutzen unmolested, with Stutzen accuracy.
7mm rm rebarrelled by Jager SA, husqvarna 1900 in grs bifrost (that would also fit the swede).

All have simple stocks that don’t properly fit me (all quite short) so any of them would benefit from the new stock, although of course the bifrost fits well.

Original plan was the swede, but the 7mm rm shoots really nicely now and looks sleek in its new black cerakote, and the Heym is a thing of sunny afternoon walk about beauty.

I’m thinking the poor old swede might now be obsolete in my collection.

I wouldn’t waste the money on any of them to be honest. They’re great rifles, but not worthy of such expense.

Wait until you find the one you love, maybe a nice classic Mauser, then put a new barrel on it and a new stock.

The only one that sticks out is the stutzen, that’s the one where I’d say ‘maybe’

After many years of sitting on a Gunshop shelf and mutiple 11th-hour would-be purchasers withdrawing from it's purchase, I decided to use the Dumoulin action for my 35 Whelen build. Its not a true M98 but still very nice and slick as a lizard's tongue:

You won't be disappointed with a Gary Cain stock. He'll even make one in a thumbhole stutzen style!

Out of interest, what sort of prices do his stocks run at?
I have a Steyr SM12 and the number of aftermarket stocks available for modern Steyrs is somewhere between zero and one (Gary’s ws is the only one I have found which even mentions Steyrs).
Given I’m not a massive fan of the OE stock (Green, slightly wobbly plastic effort) I am considering changing it, but cost will be a determining factor!

Any thoughts?

Hmmm, I had Gary do a Laminated Thumbhole Sporter - Devcon and aluminium pillar bedded - for a Howa 1500 barreled action.

Now...That might sound like polishing a turd but, I have a lot of faith in Howa - cold hammer forged barrel - bolt from one piece of steel - proper recoil lug - and for a total cost of around £1600, I doubt I could have bought better off the shelf.

Sorry OP if butting in.......Depends on material - beech laminated, made to measure was around £850 and another £250 odd for glass and pillar bedding - that was for thumbhole sporter. If your talking walnut then it all depends on the grade.

Gary was also doing his own walnut laminate made in house. He's an excellent craftsman and I am over the moon with the two he did for me.

Give the swede a treat and fit it into a shiny new stock - you know it makes sense!!

Not at all.
I’m having a nice walnut stock, already bought the blank.

Interesting - I rate the 1900 above the Mauser but it is less a “classic”. I have always wanted a 98 but having handled a few now I prefer the 1900 action - which is super slick and the triggers are very good.

Or buy 1894's TT Proctor 6.5 x 55.........And treat it to some new walnut

What am I talking about - it doesn't need new walnut.....just buy it so it stops teasing.
It does tease . Somebody needs to buy it 🥰

Realistic for me . The barrel is too long . Needs to be screw cut . The scope has put me off.
Regarding the scope a friend had a David Roberts in 243 similar scope system . He could not get it to zero or find someone who knew about the scope so he decided to sell it
