Dr refused to complete medical form.

This is being resisted by the BMA, but as GP’s tend not to strike it’s a difficult fight for them. They simply don’t want any liability in case it goes wrong!
Mind you the amount of “mentally unwell” people who murder with knives doesn’t seem to make a jot of difference to the dead!
Nor the perpetrators at Hungerford, Dunblane and more recently in Plymouth, who were all known by the police to have significant reasons for either refusal to grant, or removal of the permission to possess weapons.

One of my customers was charged £100 for a HGV medical so he could transport his 12 ton steam roller about. I doubt he needs a HGV to drive the roller. He says there is a firm doing it for £45 but he'll be 81 next time, so won't bother.
My surgery charged me £80 for the HGV medical. I don't think I'll ask them next time.
D4 Drivers do it for £55

This is quite correct - all 43 Forces apply a six months validity to proforma.
The biggest issue is with the length of medical records.
For new grants, full life time ( or at least from age 10) are required.
For renewals, some Forces want >10 years, but a few (for example Surrey & Sussex) want >30 years of medical records, which can be a challenge, especially for applicants born outside the UK.
Does anyone know if the six months' validity is policy/documented anywhere? I put in my renewal with Cheshire, but it's been rejected because they only accept renewals within 90 days of expiry. Despite the online application seeming to indicate it can take up to 18 weeks. The actual wording is "It can take up to 18 weeks to grant a new certificate." This however is under the the "Renew a firearm and shotgun certificate" section and is the only reference to time shown.

So, expecting my GP to take several weeks as usual, I started the process already. However my GP turned the proforma around in less than an hour; yeah, I know! Which means my proforma will be about 10 days past 3 months old by the time I can renew. At which Cheshire will only accept it with a supporting letter confirming nothing's changed. Which is going to cost me, again...

Cheers.

Are you getting confused between the Medical Proforma, which needs to have been done within 6 months of the date of application to be valid for a grant, or the renewal date of an existing, with the police not accepting your renewal until 90 days before the current certificate expires?

Take a good look at

especially Section 6

I'd make sure that it is in as soon as possible, but as long as it is in with more than 8 weeks to expiry you would benefit from automatic 8 week extension. And I'd be telling them early on in the extension phase I'd be expecting a Sec7 if they don't get it done before the extension expires.

That would give a min of 16 weeks, (8 + 8) or 20/21 weeks (90 days + 8 weeks, or 12 + 8 weeks)

All by email or tracked post, so you have a paper trail of correspondence.

I put both lots in April at the same time with Durham at the 6 months acceptance for medical forms.
Got in touch with them in July,I was told they've got everything they need & come September I would automatically get a extension letter & that my renewed tickets would be done within that time.

I don't think so. When I got the proforma from my GP it was about 6 months until my current certificates expired. I started this early because checking https://www.cheshire.police.uk/ar/a...ertificates/renew-firearm-shotgun-certificate seems to say to allow 18 weeks. Although that apparently only applies to initial grants, despite being on the renewals page. I was expecting my doctor to take a month or two to get my paperwork sorted, or to allow time to go the SAR route if needed. Instead, and to my utter astonishment, my GP turned the proforma around in about an hour. Fast forward a month; I submitted my renewal last night. It was rejected this morning for being too early, as they'll only accept a renewal within 90 days. Not that this is indicated anywhere.

Waiting until the 90 days before expiry point will make my proforma about 3 months and 1 weeks old. I'm told that at this point Cheshire won't accept the proforma without a supplementary letter from my GP confirming nothing has changed. Which means I'll need to fork out more money to my GP for the additional letter. It's just annoying that it's going to cost me yet more, when I though I was doing everything correctly.

Shotgun Medicals is who I went with, good service and very prompt.

To be honest I respect their view as an individual but I also don't care, I want you to state in your professional capacity whether you are aware or have any concerns over my mental health period!
Indeed. Else what next? GPs refusing to do medical certification for road haulage drivers' licences because they don't agree with projected further dual carriageway building or motorway construction.

Disgrace, his or her personal views should not be taken into account for a professional matter.
How do they know if you just shoot clays for sport 🤷‍♂️

Who stated that if the pro forma is over 90 days old, that the police would not accept it?

I can't see anything that states how long the doctor's pro forma is valid for, only that the doctor agrees that the police can contact them if they want to clarify things.

You could just print out Form 201, fill it in, and send it in with a cheque by Special Delivery.

I would also keep the rejection of your initial renewal submission, as if the police don't want you to send in a renewal in good time, they should easily process the renewal before expiry. They should not even be extending by the default 8 weeks if they are so confident on their turnaround times.

During The Great Cough of 2020-22 my GP surgery which I been with since birth wouldn't do my HGV medical, ended up using a Dr that didn't know me from Adam.
He said "If you drivers keep coming for medicals as you are,I'll be able to retire early"

Well …. Don’t know where my next medical will be from … jist had a letter from our local practice they are cancelling their contract with NHS and closing doors in November ! So that’s 6500 folk in small town without a gp & I’m hearing more practices will follow same road

This may help people in the future. I was advised my GP were dragging their feet with medical certs so I used simply medicals. Sent the permission form wednesday morning and had the completed med form back filled in Friday morning. Not the cheapest but a great turnaround.

Find that amazing, assuming i am understanding what you put, permission form sent wednesday morning and completed GP report back the following Friday morning, what just one and half days in between.

So your registered GP sent your medical records in an amazingly quick time to them to allow that to be done, when you state that they had a reputation for dragging their feet with medical certs, yet they dropped everything to send your records to a third party GP.

Just be careful when selecting third party medical providers....there are a few that the Police will not accept due to very poor quality of documentation, and if rumour is correct, signed by 'Doctors' not registered with the GMC. Worth checking with your local force that they will accept whomever you are considering.
The whole process is a mess - the GMC needs to 'require' it's Doctors to complete proforma regardless of personal opinion.

Yes, someone at the club who uses the same surgery was chasing for 6 weeks, he went to simply medicals and then on the same day got a call from the GP to pick up. 🤔 I've also been told one of the GP Dr is also a shooter, so it might be hit and miss. I just didn't want the faff of chasing.
The process I did was fill out a permission to release my documents, this was emailed by simplymedical to the GPs with me on the mail. (Presumably an automated template as it was pretty quick)
A couple of days later returned filled out. It's the same proforma as on the staffs and west mids website so hopefully the renewal will go through with no issues.
