I need to replace the red filter i normally use and whilst looking for one on "that auction site" i see they do several other colours, i'm thinking about trying a blue one, anyone got one? are they any good? what are your colour preferences?

Amber, you can see eyes nearly as well as red. But it gives a real advantage in you can see further and in more detail.

Hope this helps.

+1 Amber

I have also tried Blue and Green but they hardly highlight the eyes at all.

yes red does seam to pick the eyes up that little bit better then amber. but amber will give you more distance. as i find red does cut down the range abit

Cheers lads, Had trouble last night identifying in the red filter as it is scratched to buggery, so a new one is needed and i suppose a change in coulour might pay dividends anyway? So amber it is then, i'll get one sorted and let you know how i get on.

A filter is NOT required when lamping foxes but a dimmer system is... i cant believe a scratched filter makes one bit of a difference.

If i put a dimmer on a light with a filter that is scratched so badly that we are having trouble i.d'ing foxes at 200yds would that not make things worse and therefore more dangerous, the first rule of foxing with a rifle being "make absolutly sure it is is a fox" or am i missing something.
At any rate, it's me that pulls the trigger, it's me that has to be happy with what i am shooting at and it's me that takes the flack if i make a mistake, with this in mind if it takes a new filter at £20 or so for me to be sure of the target, i think it's a sensible £20 to spend?

il go along with that dimmer switch the best thing we dont use any filters any more see em come in with the archer line em on dimmer on a tad you get the eyes instantly you know its the target you after usually before the lamp half on its thud time

if you havent got night vision then yes a filter is needed scan with filter on then take filter off use dimmer keep calling them they come straight in white light much easier to see through the scope

a scratched filter does make a big difference. i had a red one that was marked to hell. it does affect the beam imo. a good one also is the filter film they put over disco lights. its cheap and as its thinner it lets more light out

Spot on jay22, if the filter is scratched to hell it can only make the light less effective, it's not rocket science?
At the end of the day i find on my ground that a coloured filter works better than a white light, it maybe that the ground around me is lamped by people with white lamps that tend to miss a few making the foxes that i see shy to a white light, i don't know, but what i can say is that with a coloured filter i get better results and with a scratched one it is more difficult to get a 100% I.D at distance.
Whatever the case i will continue to use the system that works for me untill i see the need to change.

The reason you may find you have more success with a filter Tikka is that the light is less startling to your quarry than a bright white light.
Foxes are used to seeing white lights all around - cars, houses etc, and associate them with danger.
A dimmer system is a good investment and can further reduce the "spook" factor.

- red has been a firm favourite for a long time possibly due to the spectrum being less visible to foxes, and I presume a coloured lens is less "spooky" and more intriguing for a fox which may give you a few more precious seconds to get a safe shot off.

With regards scratched lenses, your absolutely right, a scratched lens diffuses light rather than project it. In the same way a car headlight becomes pretty crap if it gets scratched, as does a rifle scope - the scratches alter the beam of visible light.

Out of interest, and in answer to your original question, Green lenses are more visible than white (green is the most visible colour in the light spectrum)
Orange is supposed to be similar to Red with extra definition, Blue is very good at penetrating light mist or haze, and red, well we all know about that old favourite.

Cheers Axe, just the sort of advice i was looking for, i think i'll try the amber first then as i shoot enough bunnies to pay for it, a green one.

Axe is right,

try looking at a 170 or a blitz with your own eyes, it flipin hurts.

so i am a + 1 for the amber, i only use the red for close range bunnies etc. i use full on white for long range shots bunnies out past 200 yards etc, don't use green or blue anymore as they just don't pull my switch.

i have a dimmer with the in line connections etc in my tool box £40 worth of kit that i no longer use,

bob.

Oh well if you can only see to 100 yards with a filter and are happy with the reduced range fine with me... i have called fox from 500y with my clear lens that would be 250y past a red NF filter. Fox are not spooked by a clear light as they see the moon every night and it has no filter or colour at all. Filters are for close range rabbits and not for foxes out past 250y.

Bob, if you no longer use the dimmer and want to sell at a reasonable price i may give it a try, PM me if you do.
Red-dot, fella, you miss the point,It's because i wasn't happy with the range on the SCRATCHED filter that i want another:doh:with an unsratched filter i have no problems, i just thought that before i bought another red one(BECAUSE THE ONE I HAVE IS SCRATCHED), i'd ask the question about other colours?
