Chainsaw Safety Lesson...

In all honesty, I often don't wear safety gear when I'm using my saws. In mitigation though, I reiterate my earlier statement that I'm slightly frightened of them. This ensures I don't take chances with them. Common sense and a healthy respect for the tool goes a long way to keeping you safe, while complacency is a quick route to injury!
I hope you don’t come to regret your complacency or is that stupidity? Chainsaws don’t care whether you’re frightened of them or not. They also don’t always do as expected. ☹️

Thank you. It's always nice to see someone take an interest in your welfare. Regardless of how insulting, patronising, or unwanted it may be 😉

Whilst it pains me to say it, he is right.

I once did not bother with my PPE on a "quick' chainsaw job.

It went tits up, and I was lucky enough, to live to regret it.

Yes I realise, I've cut quite a bit of ash. What I meant was that the old cutters could avoid the splitting when they only had access to axes or hand saws

Aye my old boss used to tell me stories off his grandfather felling big hardwoods on a local estate.
As in those days didnt have the luxory off boring in.

They wrapped chains round the butt back in the day.
But it really doesnt matter wot u wrap round it as long as it cant kick back at u.
Even if u using a standard back cut it only needs to hold the tree a few extra seconds or so to get it to fall normally on the hinge.

Ive only needed to use the trick a few times but its worked well enough.
I've used it more for trees with big cracks down them or once when i mis read a multi stemmed willow and had to strap it mid cut to stop the back leg breaking off on me.

Why anyone would use a chainsaw without safety gear is completely and utterly beyond me. Still each to there own.

We're all big boys if soneone decides to not wear Ppe thats on them.
But ppe only goes so far, just because u have it on does not mean u cant cut urself.
As in the original photo normal pants dont offer any protection to calfs.

Far better to actually know wot ur doing and get into safe work practices.
Never have ur body in line with the saw
Know wot causes kick back and how to avoid it.
Also know the difference how saw/log reacts to a pushing or pulling chain.
All very basic things

I will admit i dont always wear all my ppe, but i risk asses it in my head before and change my work speed/practices so im being more safety concious than normal.

Maybe he was wearing his chainsaw safety shorts 🤔
I used to think the same, but in all honesty shorts or jeans/boilersuit etc, really makes no odds. Jeans wont offer any protection anyway.
Just more fibres to get stuck in wound.

Very much this. All the PPE on the world won't save you if you lack the basic comprehension that what you're using is dangerous, and apply commonsense. Pay attention, DON'T take chances or shortcuts, and as said above know how to use the tool properly
