Hello all,

Doing a search and I can’t seem to find it in my googling. If one was to get the 3 to 6 gun cabinet with the built-in ammo storage, how many boxes of ammo are you fitting in there?

I’m going to be applying for my FAC soon. Trying to figure out what I want to do regarding storage. I’m going to try to purchase a secondhand and trying to decide what the minimum is I need. I’ve seen varying dimensions. I’m a visual person and trying to figure out what it would actually hold versus what I think it might hold. Thanks for any help!

A .243 box is approx. 30x80x140mm holding 20. So get out the Blue Peter sticky back plastic and cardboard.
 
It's not what will fit in there but what calibres your applying and what allowance you're going to ask for.
Bearing in mind most cabinets are on the small side of the capacity claims especially when fitting in scoped rifles so the little shelf with a door won't hold much.
A separate cabinet is the best bet, ideal for bolts and other valuables as well.
 
Personally wouldn’t bother with a top ammo safe as all the ones I’ve seen are tiny (bar the 16 gun broom closet sized cabinets)

As time goes on and variations get granted you will need the space. 😆

I use a 6 gun case for my guns and a 3 gun case for my ammo. I’d say that my 3 gun case is just adequate to hold the ammo limits on my certificate with a few boxes of shotgun cartridges chucked in.
 
Apply for 200 of each calibre on the grounds a range day require that many rounds for each gun. Then get as many as fit in your cabinet which will be less probably
 
Thanks for all the suggestions. I am undecided between a second hand 243 or 6.5x55. Would really like a T3 6.5x55 if I could find one for a low enough price. Reading the HO guidance I was going to apply for 250rds. A BASC range day suggests bringing 100rds so between that, stalking, zeroing, practice, etc I may request more. Just need to be realistic about it and make sure what I get will hold that much.

Will keep an eye out for a separate cabinet for ammo as well. Probably wise suggestion.

My goal is to keep it minimalist though. I have enough rifles back in the states! It has been proven that with me a bigger cabinet means more rifles😂

I second this suggestion. I've two of these, one for ammo, another as a general safe for passports, cash etc. Great value for money.

Unfortunately with our licensing system and pricing filling a cabinet isn’t so easy.
 
I had the same thoughts regarding the available space of the internal storage for 6 or so different calibers (also if you are storing your bolts there also!)

I purchased a half size shotgun cabinet (around 30" High) and intend to put shelves in it to separate ammo and bolts by calibre....

Saying that if you have a local gunshop, you might not need to purchase large amounts at one time so could be worth seeing how you get on with internal storage initially and if you don't buy an additional safe, more money saved to be used towards your first rifle!;)
(I'd maybe wait and talk to your feo and see what he suggests & see what you get granted?)

It is AFAIK manadatory for S1 ammuntion to be stored separately from S1 firearms.
In my case is is also necessary to remove bolts for storage, for otherwise I can't get the rifles in the cabinet. The bolts therefore go with the S1 ammuniton in a separate cabinet.

Not pantomime season yet but...oh no it's not!
 
I don't think its required by the firearms act, however it is recommended as best practice in the Firearms Security Handbook so may take some convincing the FEO why you need to store together.

2.46 Ammunition for section 1 firearms must be kept secure. As a matter of best practice it should be stored in its own individual secure storage, e.g. an integral, lockable compartment within a gun cabinet. Although secure storage of shotgun cartridges is not a requirement of the Firearms Acts, it is sensible to recommend that they should be locked away for both security and safety, especially where there are children in the house.

Yeah I know a guy that stores it all together in the same cabinet within the same area as me.

I recall I was nuged in the direction of a separate ammo cabinet from advice from other shooters (how to please the feo). which I wanted anyway. The ammo cabinet and the gun cabinet are in the same room though....

I've got a 7 gun bratton sound gun (rl7+) cabinet.. You could fit quite a lot of rimfire and centre fire in the top box. So really it depends on the size of your cabinet. Piece of string question.

I could easily fit the ammo and bolts in the gun cabinet that I currently have but it's only 3 guns and a decent size cabinet.

There's a big difference between a small 3 gun cabinet and a 6 gun extra deep rifle cabinet.
 
Just to say if you're new to this scoped rifles don't really fit in normal shot gun cabinets.

Don't waste your time and money looking at small 3 gun cabinets because they just aren't deep enough. By the time you get a 50mm scope on a rifle it won't fit inside.

The gun capacity given by manufacturers is also optimistic due to the width of the guns.
