Ineos Grenadier halts production

The one that people who have never driven one think is a Chelsea tractor
oh , there must be a model i haven't tried ? i tried the old defender and didn't like it because i'm 6'4'' and 20 stone , tried the new one and whilst i fitted it was clear it wasn't as utilitarian as it's predecessor , so which one haven't i tried?

Yup. The new defender is simply a discovery in Hugo boss overalls

About as utilitarian as Versace combat troosers

I heard that Ineos were going to severely limit production so that they could concentrate on the really high end market and sell low numbers of cars without most of the restrictions associated with high production numbers.

I’m super disappointed with it. I’d have bought one if it had a real basic interior, manual gearbox and a transit engine in it. That would be ten grand less and getting near useable. I could just about buy one now but the mpg is just ridiculous.

You can buy brand new 70 series Land Cruisers in this country now through grey import. They cost about 70k but there’s no dpf and a V8 diesel in them!

Why on gods earth would you want a transit engine 🤣🤣🤣 new transit are a bag of 💩 (I own two of them)

I didn’t say a new transit engine. The one in the old defender would do. I don’t really give a toss what it is, I just want cheap and utilitarian. I’m not a poser, I actually want to work my vehicle so it just needs to work efficiently.

Why the hell would anyone want a transit engine and manual gearbox ? 😂
The BMW unit and zf is infinitely better .
BMW unit is half made of plastic. A manual gearbox is much better for driving off road. Manual, low box, diff locks and none of that electronic bollox. That’s what folk that can actually drive like.

Reason for automatic box is that Grenadiers are aimed at the NGO type market in direct competition with The Landcruiser - there is not a lot of difference in price, but they are both built to last a long long time. They will often be driven by drivers not well trained in off road driving and and auto box saves huge wear and tear of clutches and drivetrains. The hydraulic torque converter smooths out throttle inputs etc. the ZF 8 speed box is the same used in many big 4x4. I have one in my Toareg. I did view manual as prerequisite for offroad driving. But an a auto box really does make life very easy. And with a low box you can drive very easily and accurately without riding a clutch.

Yes they are expensive, but in markets like Australia they are not that expensive compared to Landcruisers of similar spec. All the running gear and suspension is hugely tough and will probably hundreds of thousands on rough roads. ZF Box and BMW straight six provides a tough powertrain.

Most who buy them will either be fleet / commercial buyers either on finance packages or on balance sheet. Long life and high residuals will be key.

If you want cheap buy a Great Wall.

I wholly disagree.

Yes, they started off with a design brief as you’ve described but that’s not what they’ve ended up with.

The car is an absolute Frankenstein’s monster.
It’s a Chelsea tractor but not a very good one because it’s rubbish on the road. It should have had IFS if it’s going to be a luxury vehicle.
It’s a utilitarian vehicle but not a very good one because it’s far too expensive for that market. You can’t use it for long distance travel because the range is terrible because they put the wrong engine in it. The cost of repair makes it completely prohibitive for NGOs. Phone ineos and ask how much it is for a spare key or a new steel wheel. You can’t even claim the VAT back on most of them. They’ve been swinging and missing the whole way through.
So disappointing because I was expecting what you’ve described but that’s not what it is.

Ineos themselves have said that they’re going to scale production right back and concentrate on low volume, high price luxury specials. That’s a complete abandonment of the original ideas.

Mercedes G wagen style market?

Or a Tata Xenon like wot I had (spares were the nightmare not the driving of it).

Yup
None of that is correct obviously

“Actually drive” 😂 what a hero ! Lol
If you need an auto box, traction control and hill decent control to drive off road, then I don’t consider that you know what you’re doing. If that makes me a hero then all hail me. 😬

that’s exactly the market they’re saying they’re going to target. £200k motors for footballers and other folk with no sense.

Apparently, the emmissions regulations are far more strict with higher production numbers. Manufacturers have to average the carbon emissions across their range and have a set percentage of EVs or they get fined. The only way forward for them is huge investment in more types of car or scaling right back and becoming a niche brand.

Now you’re starting to make yourself sound like someone with no clue .
Why do some folk feel the need to try and sound superior just by saying new tech is rubbish and why can’t you drive a crappy old Landrover like me the driving god ! Yadah yadah yadah

It’s a bad look.

I’m absolutely happy to use new tech when it is actually better. I just haven’t found much that is yet. It’s a risk assessment thing for me. I go to fairly remote places that I need to get back from. If I drive an auto and the battery dies, then I’m screwed. I can bump start a manual and drive home.
If I have traction control instead of diff locks and a low box, I’m screwed if it stops working. They can stop working because of an ABS sensor. There’s no back up. That might be the difference between getting home and not. The tech isn’t worse, it’s just not better and is less reliable.

I know a guy who took his new defender camping and fishing for a few days. He killed the battery by opening and closing the doors too many times. You can’t even just jump start them, they need to be connected to the internet to recalibrate.
If I’m going to the shops or out for a day somewhere, then I’ll take a new defender every single time but if I need to go somewhere that it would be hard for me to get back from, then I want to have a plan b for when it goes tits up.
