First stalking rifle

Hi guys, wondered if any one could recommend a good first stalking rifle. I don’t have a massive budget and for now just need something to get me out. Iv got a .308 with suppressor on my FAC. I saw a Sauer 100 classic xt with 8x56 Schmidt and bender scope and a moderator on for £800-£900 the other day. which has since sold. Would something like this be a good purchase?
Anyone know the difference between the 100 and the 101?

Don’t overlook howa. They are a solid rifle and can be had for not a lot of money. But avoid the over moulded rubber hogue stock as they are very flexible and will touch the barrel when in a bipod. The blued actions are a lot smoother than the stainless that seem to gall from experience.

Or what I would really recommend is finding a Tikka T3. They are just so consistent out the box with so many accessories that fit or just leave it as it comes from the factory and shoot. I have had full customs that aren’t as smooth out the box as a Tikka T3.
 
The NET is your friend in this case. Just surf the gun shops for used rifles in 308, if one catches your eye no matter where it is, a delivery can be arranged at cost to your local dealer. ..(smooth' operation of the the bolt)

My first one 5 years ago was a second hand howa 1500 sporter in .308win for £250, mod was £270 and a £400 vortex scope and rings.

The rifle has since been changed for a tikka T3x SV , but for a cheap "entry level" rifle, the Howa was ace. Keep looking for something that catches your eye bud!

Love sauers mate. Definetly a good choice.
 
Any of the above are all good, the Mauser M18 is also worth looking at.

If you are planning on buying second hand, worth getting the rifle borescoped by the RFD before you hand any money over. Encountered a few "mint nick" target rifles for sale that look excellent, but the bore and chamber is pitted and covered in crazy paving from the heat!

Saved me a few pennies on occasions :)

get a nice old Parker hale and buy the 4x32 swaro in sale here, then learn to get close, develop the field craft skills whilst appreciating classic qualities

Spend the rest in your dsc’s and some stalking

Once you know what you’re doing, see if changing kit is something you want to do.

Just my view.

Unfortunately you're a bit far away but Ivythorn run by Steve Beaty have a range so you can try before you buy and he's a top bloke to deal with., Not sure if there's any where near you has something similar to there but no point buying a rifle of any make or cost that then you don't like or feel comfortable with, this then makes you loose confidence in the rifle and your shooting so you then have the hassle of a variation and starting on your rifle journey all over.

Carlton moor range isn’t too far away.
 
Great choice this will accommodate every uk species.
However if this is you're first rifle you may encounter re coil flintch.
So 6mm 6.5 may be more suitable.
Can you try a 308 before purchasing.

Thanks Gary. Iv complete a few stalks and spent some time at the range +dc1 all will a .308, the only other calibre I have shot is 6.5x55. Iv also just received my FAC for .308 so maybe abit late to change now 😀

Get whatever you're comfortable with but also what you're most accurate with

.308 is a pussycat 😉 As for rifles? Find one you like the look of, whether it's 20 days or twenty years old, and just buy it. Chances are it'll shoot better than you're actually capable of yourself, and if you love how it looks you'll shoot it well regardless. I've bought every rifle I own sight unseen (apart from my .22 rimfire), and they all delight me each time I use them.
