Reloading question on de-priming

Ok so seems the reloading kit I got with the .17 hornet dies the de priming tool or more so the headed de caping pin is bent so when trying to deprime it just pushes the rod up do I need specific hornady replacement pins or are they universal ect. Sorry for what possibly is a stupid question brand new to this

Not sure whether other manufacturers' parts will be compatible. Not sure if you'll be able to get a pin easily for it anyway. I'd go down Quixote's route first of all. And if it's got bent whilst you've had it, try to ascertain why it got bent, to prevent it happening again.

All good fun, isn't it.

No first time looking at the press and die parts and realised it was bent and it's not Gona work lol

Or you can buy a cheapish Lee universal decapping die. Then you'll never bend the more expensive fiddly pin again.
I broke a couple. Spud1967 was a vwry helpful supplier of replacements

I would second this... Though I've never broken a pin myself I like the idea of keeping dirty cases away from my sizing die. Decap -> clean -> size etc.

What dies are they as for some spare pins are available. I now use a Lee universal de capper. Before I made a pin out of a panel pin and a broken drill shank.

So it's the hornady custom 17. Hornet die, think a lee load universal decapper mite be the way to go IV had to make do with what I can only describe as an abomination of a make **** pin made from a nail lol 1000025854.webp

That's fine if it does the job. A small masonry nail would be better or a nail from a plastic cable clip would be good. I think RBCS and Redding sell spare decapping pins.

Think I'm Gona go for the lee universal decapping die, to be fair from what people have said it makes sense not to put dirty brass through the resizing die, for what £20 ISH it's worth it, then on to the tumbler and tumble media orrrrr a ultrasonic cleaner and I feel this mini side hobby may overtake the shooting itself lol

Danger Danger,
Reloading is a Rabbit hole longer than a Vietcong tunnel.

Should it be annealed first?
If it bent rather than broke it is 90% made from mild steel so bending it back straight should work. Check the pin diameter as to if it actually passes through the flash hole (the litle hole where the primers ignition passes through) some cases have a smaller hole RWS are so in my experience. If it is too large pop the shaft into a drill chuck and use emery cloth to thin it down a bit.

Some dies (like my Forster dies) come with two sizes of pin for this exact reason. My Lapua SR brass has a small flash hole so needs the smaller decapping pin. Probably a bit easier than lapping down the pin!

Good tip. I once made a shotgun firing pin like this.

The Lee Decapper won't work as it's .200" Ø parallel section, so really isn't 'Universal'.
The .17 Rem and .17 Hornet can only be decapped with a .17 FLR die which has a special size .170" Ø expander ball.
Some case brands in .17 calibre also have smaller than usual flash-holes which trap the Lee pin, and Heavy Duty decappers.
Finding a replacement pin is the only solution.

Shove the Lee pin in an electric drill, spin it up while moving a bit of grindstone up and down the pin.....check pin diameter at intervals.
Worked for me and my 6BR cases...........
