Case trimming question

Ok so daft question but don't know anyone personally who reloads and well getting some mixed signals from YouTube lol
So brand new to reloading not even reloaded first round yet, so got some de primed 17 hornets cases tumbled and cleaned looking at making sure my cases are the right length and have a RCBS manual case trimmer, but the question is how do you measure the neck length or are you measuring the whole case as in theory only the neck stretches and then you trim down to the hornady specified size ?

Sorry if this is a stupid question lol

Your reloading manual (I’m assuming you have one or more) will give the maximum overall case length dimension (i.e. from base to case mouth) & generally a suggested length to trim to (again from base to case mouth) which is several thousands of an inch shorter than the maximum length.

A good reloading manual such as the Lyman or the Hornady will have many chapters explaining how to reload including preparing & trimming cases etc. If you don’t have a copy it would be very wise to get one.

Don’t assume it’s only the neck which stretches - it isn’t.

Funny story I posted this question went back to the hornady 10th edition reloading manual and with in 20mins I read what I needed to know lol

There you are then.

It could be worth checking if your decimal point is in the right place on the length you mentioned otherwise you’ll have a lot of trimming to do ;)

Don't measure. Just make your life easy and buy a Lee trim die for your chosen calibres and a Quick Trim tool. Reloading WILL boil your brain if you overthink it

gotw;
Here’s some bits that are easy to use.
The actual shell holder part is not is for 223 size case heads but it will work for Hornet. Use it as is, or buy correct one.
The case must be in the shell holder for correct finished length but can be hand held or used in a drill or screw driver.
Pm me with a delivery address and I’ll send these free issue. I won’t be shooting Hornet again.
Ken.
