Welsh Deer

Until recently my father had a smallholding on the edge of Drefach Felindre, (north Carmarthenshire) and for many years he's had a small group of reds, with a decent stag leading, regularly wander through.
his land was bordered by extensive little-used estates and woodland.
and yes, we managed to resisted the temptation ! (apparently in spite of being Welsh )
But of course Cornishmen never Smuggle,Wreck or Poach 🧐🤔🙄🤗

I used to live in Aberaeron, iv not long returned from a few days seeing family and rough shooting there. Iv been shown pictures of Muntjac deer in the area.

Was speaking to Meurig from BASC who conducted a deer survey and found a larger number of sika deer than expected. I can’t remember exactly where but I believe it was Cardigan/Carmarthenshire way.

There were Muntjac in the Llanelli area late 80's. watched them over winter and left them alone. Not there the following year.
There are a good number of Roe in this area, Crychan forest and Halfway forest on the Carmarthenshire / Powy border, near Brecon.
They are regularly sighted on walks and cycle rides through the Forest. The forest tracks are well known and used by Walkers, Cyclists and Horse Riders.
I have friends who go there regularly and have shown me photographs of deer, always Roe, mainly Does with Kids. I shoot over large areas of ground to the N.E. and S.E. of these forests, and I have never seen Roe outside of the forests. They seem to have all they need within the forest.

I have a friend who has a small holding several miles away from llanybyyder. He saw a Roe recently and showed me pictures of the browse damage to some young Spindle trees. He did not shoot them

There are deer all round dolgellau, st asaph and welshpool.

Supposedly reds at lake vyrnwy but have never seen any and as been a long time since I have heard of them being seen.

North Wales would definitely be a great place for deer if farmers and hound foot packs didn't shoot them when they see them.........

Correct there are pockets of Red west of Welshpool. I know two farms that regularly send me pics of them. Lots of fallow around me. From my garden on most evenings I can see at least one group with the thermal.

a good few coming about now. A small herd of reds have moved onto some ground i have not far from welshpool.

Also seeing muntjac and roe regular on some other permissions around knighton which is great to see.

Hound packs disappeared from Wales 20 years ago.

We've still got a hound pack in Carmarthen. Up until last year we had 3 in this area 2 of which hunted on our farm.

Definitely not. Back home it's still alive and well 😂
The foot packs that were used mainly to drive foxes to guns in our area disappeared (or went to ground) long ago. Leaving just the Hooray Henries on their nags to follow an artificial trail.
To be honest I had forgotten about the trail hunters when I posted.

No, I'm talking about fox packs.
The law has still not reached North Wales yet?
They'll have to send in the mounties! :) North Wales mounted police as opposed to the North West Mounted Police.

The foot packs are still about in a lot of Wales you just don't get told much! And it was foot packs I was on about shooting deer! Claiming the hounds will chase them. Just an excuse for poor hound discipline
