I need to crack-on with my 35 Whelen project but just when I think the way forward is clear, another possibility scurries across the ol' grey matter. It's clearly not enough to know for sure what scope rings & mounts one wishes to use!

As of writing I'm 'troubled' by the following:

a. Should I forget the 35 Whelen and get a Variation for a 9-3X62?
b. Other than muzzle blast and loss of velocity, should I foresee problems with an 18" barrel in either chambering, and if so what?
c. What weight of bullet would work best in an 18" barrel if given of whatever the standard twist rate is for both chamberings?

I'm trying to be positive about the time a Kent Police FAC Variation might take, but if its going to be more than 6-months I'll be sticking with the 35 Whelen.

Your thoughts appreciated.

Thanks

Is it going to be moderated?
Not sure which action you were planning on using?
20" is as short as I like to go with centrefires.
35 Whelen can be formed with plentiful available 30-06 brass.
9.3x62, over there not so sure 🤔

Just out of interest why 18"? Lot of muzzle blast and seeing the 9.3 x 62 (and maybe the 35 Whelen but I don't know) is a fairly slow bullet, part of its charm and efficiency do you really want to cut down the muzzle velocity by what might be in percentage terms quite a substantial loss? Your rifle your choice, just interested.

David.

In all honesty, because I've seen a 9-3X62 rifle with an 18" barrel that would only require re-stocking in stutzen configuration.

My 9.3 x 62 in QR Leupold mounts and now has a Swaro 1-6x24 EEi

I think the scope in the picture is a S&B 1.25 - 4 x 24 which is pretty good too

The one below is my old 404 Jeff which I gave away as it couldn't be made to cycle reliably

I'm thinking of moving on from my 9.2 M98 rifle and get an R8 barrel in its place (continuation of my journey on the dark side :). )

I think my 9.3 is a 24 '' barrel and is cut for mod (which I never use!)

I don't know what an 18'' barrel might be like, however presumably you do as that is where you are thinking of going
