Out last night.

Early start tonight as have a invite on a shoot tomorrow with a bit of travelling.
Started at chicken unit with nothing showing so a bit of hand calling brought in a good size dog fox#10620241227_202827.webp
Moved on to another farm with very little wind but plenty of moisture in the air. Again nothing showing apart from roe in the fields.
So started hand calling again and brought a vixen in to just under 100yards #10720241227_211039.webp

Back at it after the Xmas break. Decided to try the hillside for a change. Stopping at a gate a quick scan showed a fox looking at me from 30 yards away. I grabbed the rifle out of the truck and had a quick look. It was now about 80 yards away and unconcerned.
I sent it on its way and opened the gate. After closing it a look about showed another fox looking at me from amongst the gorse and bracken. A tricky one . Up on the sticks I fired but didn’t hear that satisfying thud. Maybe I’ll find it this morning.
Next I spotted a fox moving through bracken but was unable to get a clear shot so left it til next time. On my way out I came out of a forest and spotted a fox staring at me from 40 yards away. I put the rifle out the window and it had now moved off a ways. Still the fatal last stare was its downfall. A vixen and a dog and a couple at least to be dealt with tonight hopefully.

Out thursday evening /night. Heavy fog, the crows gave me a few shots with the 410, knocked half a dozen down. As it got dark I cable tied a little pen torch under the barrels and nailed ten rats lurking in the hedge around the farm yard - what fun! spot with thermal, then pop the torch on for a quick shot. A remote switch for the torch would have been perfect.

Out last night to another farm, fox had been up on top the massive silage clamp, pooing everywhere apparently. All I saw was a big old farm cat up there - I think he is maybe the phantom poo-er!
No fog but miserable, on off drizzle. Had a wander round the fields but all clear, so nothing shot with the little hornet. Gave her a good dry off and pull through with an oily patch when home.

Got out at last. Heard my dog as I watched the bait site. He was close but never showed. Then a vixen erupted in full song barely drawing breathe. Never showed.
I thought they moved to the next farm so I walked back to the car and drove to the neighbours farm. Wasn't long and I found possibly the gobby vixen.
She was at max range for the wee rimfire and she could run !!. Needed a little more horse power!
Then I found a rat and then I moved onto another place and called another fox in but hmm I've not found it! Got to return in the morning with Jess. I saw two others but they didn't come in.
I'm confident I've now got 85 down.
Think I'll dig the twipple out again, you'll see why in the video....

Nipped out for two hours - saw one of the three demons which came in to 420 yds straight downwind then sat down studying me - a little bit far on a windy night - even for the triple deuce and the Zulus.
Great night for the thermal spotter though after a week of 10 plus at night - v cold wind …

No way of ambushing them FB?

I have tried baiting them Smelly but without success - the problem is they come across the face of an adjacent hill (where I cannot go) the same time every night but never closer than 4-500 yards except that one night recently with the singleton but I was busted as soon as I turned the IR on. Damned frustrating!
I am starting to think they too have rangefinders….

Can you get permission?

Bitter cold wind forced me off the moor tops last night, Only heard one barking way way off in the distance around 6pm, saw one on a mission about a mile across the next farm round 7 ish, halfway home started to rain, at 11, just back in from the dog walking round the village & bumped the village fox again.
No sign of drop off vehicles or new stock. :thumb:

There you go #85.

Before finding that and she hadn't gone far at all I was back looking for that dog fox elsewhere.
Lol he was there, he likes to survey this field by just sticking his head out of a ditch. I'm learning his ways slowly but this morning as it came light he spotted me and worked his way around me to get down wind and towards where I think is his current home. I know that because I saw him cross behind me in a canter. Good sport a clever one is.

This is now reminiscent of a contest Charlie vs Potman and me had years ago on a bloodstock farm near my home, we chased that particular customer for weeks before finally nailing him, by virtue of Potman walking up the lane & poking his stalking stick into the ditch,

#61

Called into a place I haven't been to in ages , a grass field surrounded by scrubby woodland.
Whilst I was deciding where to set up I was just watching 2 roe to my left and a few rabbits when all of a sudden a fox appeared from nowhere , so hastily got on the sticks, switched on Alpex and there was a nice dog fox sat down looking at me on the edge of cover.
Sent a 55 grn which caught him just under the chin at 98 yds 😄 fox was in fantastic condition.

Watching plenty wildlife last night , grey partridge, woodcock , mallard , roe , hares and rabbits.
