Buy a 7mm-08 it’s the perfect middle ground between the creedmoor and the .308 it’s also more efficient in a short barrel than the creedmoor. Being a .308 case derivative it’s infinitely more shootable than the 7mm PRC which is more a cousin of the rem mag than the 08

7mm-08 or 6.5CM

I'd go 6.5CM. Even if reloading, CM has more readily available components and the 6.5 bullets have had a heck of an amount of R&D thrown into them.

I've noticed that, even with a quick 10 min Google search for loading components. But so much factory ammunition for the CM too.

The only thing with the 6.5CM is to whether the firearms department will grant me one for wild boar..... 🤔 I know there is no legal minimum calibre and it's recommended to be 270 minimum..
But to be honest, all my shooting currently is fox and deer. The deer being Muntjac, Roe and Fallow around my area. But I'm also very close to Boar areas, hence I want one rifle for it all, just incase the opportunity arises. It certainly wouldn't be driven boar though!

There's also the bonus of the CM having readily available factory ammo to get you going before you start reloading
Another BIG bonus for sure!
Again, a quick Google for 7mm-08 and for 6.5CM ammunition and it's VASTLY different in what's available for them

Not necessarily, you can form 7mm-08 brass from .308 brass easily, primers and powder are the same availability and to say that the creedmoor has more R&D put into it ignores ~100 years of 7mm history (7x57, 7x64, 7mm Rem Mag etc).

That's if he wants to have the hassle of forming brass. Not something I personally could be bothered with.

I never said Creedmoor has more R&D thrown at it?

Apologies I misread your post.

I still stick with my advice that the 7mm-08 is better of the cartridges if he’s happy to reload. Especially if boar are on the scene.

I get that I could form 308 cases BUT I also know what the Firearms licensing Officer can be like when they check and see I've a 7mm-08 on my ticket but have bullets with 308 stamped on them. Not all Firearms licencing officers are clued up and may be more hassle than it's worth. I've had issues with out local one in the past in being over pedantic.

Plus my OCD may not like 308 stamped on a 7mm-08 bullet! 😂

I'd say the rifle will be 65% fox, 30% Deer and 5% Boar "IF" boar permission ever comes my way.
Then I still stand with the 7mm-08, you can load it lighter than a .308 for fox but it’s splitting hairs.

Don’t forget that whichever you end up with will make minuscule differences compared to buying a rifle that you find comfortable to shoot.

I will never own a 308 mostly because of such and similar recommendations as on this thread. I won't be surprised if soon police across the UK refusing to grant anything other than 308. Now to the OP question, since you're getting into reloading I will recommend 7-08 I own creedmoore as well but is nothing like "internet" hunters describe it, if 6.5 attract you then swede is the way to go. I feed my 7-08 with 308 Norma cases and they are perfect I wouldn't worry about stamp on the case unless you own a 308 as well

For me and your circumstances - the .308 wins. Factory ammunition availability will top the other two considerations and allows for use with all quarry you wish to shoot. If you want to reload then there’s easily available components.

6.5CM really isn’t all that - plenty of better 6.5mm cartridges. The 7mm-08 is nice and a great compromise but only if you reload.

I own/owned all three; they have their places but as a versatile tool - the .308 wins - unless you reload then it’s the 7mm-08 - forget the 6.5CM.

I gave a friend 50 Remington 260 Remington cases when he was short of 7mm-08 cases. He had no issues using them. I did go shopping for a 7mm-08 in 1999 and came back with a 260 Rem. I have sat in the cupboard, 308 Win ammunition in 4 flavours, all easily obtained. Some reloaded ammunition, Geco Zero, RWS Evo Green and RWS target ammunition. I doubt I could ever come close to that selection that if I was looking for 7mm-08 ammunition. I know if I walked down to Edinburgh Rifles, I could get more 308 Win ammunition in flavours that I don't already have.

.308 is and would be my choice. Reloading or factory ammunition there is a huge selection of rifles and ammunition available, just Google .308 ammunition, just about every gun shop offers a large selection in stock.
There is nothing you are going to point a .308 at (with the right choice of projectile) in this country, that is not going to end up dropping on the spot, including boar, if you do your bit.
