Threatened ban on driven grouse shooting

I have downloaded your flyer and sent it to my Newton Abbot MP.
I don`t have first hand experience of the difference between moorland managed for driven grouse shooting compared to those managed by the RSPB, but a good friend who is a licensed ringer for the BTO has seen with his own eyes on numerous occasions the difference. It will be a sad day for our upland nesting waders, songbirds and raptors if it is left to the likes of the RSPB.
Thank you for contacting your MP.

How long did it stay near the top? It's easy not to see things that are not in the 'latest' threads. OR off topic!
As a county level smallbore pistol shooter, I think I would have responded.
All I remember is tumbleweeds and I can't even find the thread! I know there were multiple threads on every large forum at the time. Here are two that I found on a web search

The pistol thing is over and done with - it was 10 years ago

The grouse debate is still very much live and with the countryside being attacked as it is at the minute i strongly believe people would get behind a petition
The ownership and use of .22 calibre rimfire target pistols was banned in GB in 1997. There followed many short-lived campaigns and petitions to try to reverse this. The 2014 petition and campaign was the last major attempt. The 'pistol thing' is not 'over and done with'. I think future campaigns will follow where the timing and political landscape is receptive.

To use your phrase, there will be people interested only in target shooting with pistols referring to the current 'grouse thing' as over and done with. This is the nub of the issue and the point of the 2014 campaign was that it was a UNITY campaign. However, most did not see it that way and did not get involved. That was an issue then and is an issue now.

The 2023 'Act Now' campaign was supported by all orgs and sporting press and we all tried to rally everyone to respond to the Welsh Govt proposals to ban the release of gamebirds. That achieved 42,597 responses after a massive effort over a 3 month period and WJ achieved 45,000 signatures to a govt petition to ban driven grouse shooting with a few emails and social media posts after 2 months.

I wrote to my MP after the first post but haven't heard back. So, I'm writing again. I'm getting behind other campaigns. Will it work - I hope so. Whatever, I'd like to look back and say "better to have tried and failed...... We need a more joined up approach.
Thank you.

Our new Labour MP describes himself as openly LGBT+ !!!

Good for him to help break down barriers. Some of us involved in grouse shooting also identify as LGBT+. It's not an issue on a shoot day or working 365 on the moors as far as I know. Recreational shooting is open to all. Perhaps write to your MP to explain this inclusiveness in addition to the other benefits as per BASC campaign. Link below:

What does the + mean?

Perhaps do some research online and decide what does it mean to you? Some of us involved in grouse shooting also identify as LGBT+. Well said. But don't take it that I'll agree with you on much else that you write here. It's not a "d'habitude" I intend to create.

I've worked with many people be they straight or "queer" or lesbian. Some I have and had a great deal of respect for but personally and for their skills as work colleagues. Some OTOH are and were total incompetent and, in addition, quite dislikeable, fools that I'd cross the street to avoid. People are people regardless gender or sexual orientation.

Some of the best people I've been blessed to have known have been quite open in calling themselves as "queer" or lesbian.

Totally missing the point - signing a petition and writing a response are totally different

Why not just answer the question ?
You are becoming a serious politician Conor

Reactions: JTO
Or you could use the internet to find out rather than expecting a representative of a shooting organisation to answer a question on prefixes for sexual orientation?
Hardly fair to criticise him for that.

Why post on here then ?

Presumably to answer questions and make comments regarding basc views on shooting.
Are you expecting him to be a fount of all knowledge and explain that which can be found by using google?

Not at all
But if some identify in an organisation i support and indeed subscribe to i at least expect that organisation to know where our money is going

Things like this only become an issue when people make them an issue - is that you ?

What on earth are you wibbling about?

Stop being silly Druid
If I am being silly I apologise.
However I think you are being unkind to Connor by demanding he answer what + means. It’s not for him to explain something like that and to accuse him of behaving like a politician is cruel.
That accusation should surely be reserved for a special type of person.

Druid - read the thread
The question is asked - Thats all - not by me - and is ducked
Is that not the answer of a politician ?

I like Conor but why post if you only answer the questions you want to answer ........unless you are a politician ?

Hope that makes sense to you
