Which Knife?

I bought 4 of these one as a gift to Angel eyes when he passed his level 1. I donated one as a prize in a raffle . another 1 was for the stepson as I lost his 2 years earlier then found it in the woods 3 yrs later.
I now have one I use and a spare As the stepson got his old one back 🤣

Take a look at the peltonen m07 and m95. Similar backstory to the fallkniven f1. All 3 are bombproof. The peltonen sheath is probably the best design Ive ever used.

Recently bought one of these. So far very happy with it.

If your looking for long term well made and good for skinning Helle Gt ..
I normally use Mora as a go to but the Gt has superior build quality imho.
Used on muntys and fallow with no dramas.
Between 130 and 150 depending on supplier.

I knew you would say that when I posted!
I am rather predictable, amn't I? 🤣
But with good reason, I think:
I was given a Buck 110 for my 21st birthday. I'm just shy of 53 now, so for more than 30 years I've had a Buck 110 on my belt, all day, every day. And used it, hard. It's done everything from performing a cesarean on a sheep through just about every other filthy farm task imaginable to gutting innumerable rabbits, fish and deer to cutting up my lunch and removing thorns from my children's feet.
Despite having plenty of others to choose from, the Buck remains my "go to" knife for almost everything, and never lets me down. Also, being a folder, it's discreet. So, although not legal for EDC (due to lock and blade length) I've never been challenged for carrying it in public places.
So, with that kind of track record, is it any wonder that I have no hesitation in recommending it?

I was moving house and faced with an unexpected lawyers bill! Sold a heap of stuff in a hurry. Actually only regret this and one other thing (a Guideline Fario 10’ 3wt… still sad when I think about that!).
Similar, I cleared a load of kit at the start of covid to free up some cash.

Have a look at Snake's knives on this site, as he does a range of blade types and shapes and the quality is great at a sensible price (generally sub £150). Casstrom Safari mini hunter at about £90 is also superb, but very small. Bushcraft knives - Casstrom Number 10 (bomb proof), or if you want something indestructible then have a look at the Gerber Strongarm for about £100. All three shown in the photo. Both the number 10 and the Strongarm can be used for gralloching as will as camp and bushcraft stuff.

I bought an F1 blade and using diamond files shaped the full tang and built it up with stabilised curly birch blanks. I since sprayed a little transparent plastic based grip paint over the handle for wet grip, this did darken the handle a little. A totally solid knife that just needs a strop to retain the edge for years.

SM P120UL my go to and a victorinox 4" rabbit knife for cavity work on culls before lardering . Looked at JN knives but alarm bells were ringing after a crappy greenman forge knife !

Hello, I am not realy a Knife person but do have a cheap Mora that i bought at a 1980s Game Fair and a few old pen knives from my fishing friend now past, , I am sure those who Stalk and Shoot deer need a very sharp quality knife, There is a great shop in Oxford all Japanese products and the knives are superbly made

How about an Eka Swede 10, nice orange handle and easy to find when you drop it in the heather/bracken/grass!
Nice folding knife in a nylon sheath, not dead expensive. Now on my second one as donated the first one to a stalker a few years back.
Me....I'm saving up for a Stewart Mitchell 90 as a "backup" !:D

Another consideration is ease of sharpening. I find larder work can be pretty tough on knives (removing feet, head etc). I seem to oscillate between scandi and flat grinds - scandi grinds are tougher but are slightly more fiddly to sharpen than a flat grind, which are easily sharpened with a lanksy.

I am thinking of getting a new knife in the next few months. Big birthday coming up, but I still don't want to be silly, just something basic and good quality.

I also have one of these:

A Mora Companion Carbon. I find the point on the end easier to work with. It is about 2 cm shorter an a lot lighter. I really like it, however, i have a couple of concerns - I have an acquaintance who runs bushcraft course and they use these knives and he tells me they are prone to snapping at the tang. He has seen it happen several times (mainly in extreme temperatures, but once in the UK) and his advice was that the tang on the Svord knives is so much better and more reliable. Also, I am concerned that some insect repellants will dissolve the plastic handle.

A friend is trying to pursue me to go on a trip with him to a remote area of the Erongo mountains in Namibia inaccessible with vehicles, that involves trekking in, camping and wearing a lot of Deet. Does anyone have any suggestions for a simple, lightweight and tough knife that can cope with fishing, gralloching and other camping type uses that can be relied upon in a remote area where equipment needs to be kept to a minimum?

For your birthday present knife... plenty of choice but again look for something you will use, perhaps a knife in a steel that will hold an edge... Buck for instance do several - I have a 656 Pursuit Pro Large (Bowie style 12cm blade) within budget or a 664 Alpha Hunter though that is a bit more money, both in S35v.

For the Namibia trip just take 2 Mora Companion Heavy Duty (3.2mm thick blade) in Carbon, 1 to use and 1 as back up in case of loss rather than breaking. In bushcraft classes you have inexperienced people hitting knives (often the lighter Companion... i.e. non-HD) with logs to drive them through other logs, Mora tangs especially the HD's don't break through normal use but only through abuse.

Great little blades, I got 10 of them to use the gralloching and butchery sessions on rabbits for the scouts around kent , they worked lovely and soaked up all the misuse of Rib/bone cutting etc etc
Can’t fault them, so easy to clean and keep sharp and in a plastic sheath 👍 top job for next no money
