Firearms fees hike - why you should contact your MP now

This isn't a big deal for me and not a particular talking point at our club, it's not the fee that's really an issue, it's the service level - however Staffs are not too bad.
I'm not bothering my MP with this.

I don’t see it as a big issue the price increase and your article on price increase affecting public safety didn’t even make sense. It was a propaganda peace. Headline wasn’t supported by the article. Let’s at least be factual if you want my support.

Never had an issue in 35 years with my applications. I appreciate there have been some horrible stories out there and the likes of BASC have done a good job helping its members.

What I would like to see is a reduction in price or quicker turn in variations etc for professionals using there rifles for their primary income eg pest controllers or full time deer stalkers etc.

Ive never been a big fan of the BASC. However I could get behind the above.

What I would like to see is a reduction in price for juniors and OAPs, professional's and full time deer stalkers like RFDs now have to do from the 5th Feb, can pay more as they earn money from shooting.

That I could get behind.

OAPs? If we can afford to shoot we can afford the fee. As for Juniors, they can use a firearm provided by their parent/guardian or club so why offer such a discount ?
As far as professionals go, I doubt their income is likely to exceed the very many 'ordinary' working folk so why single them out to pay more? Your suggestions make no sense.

it was a tong in cheek reply, to why should the group below receive a reduction or special treatment when others like juniors or OAPs do not. Surly we should be encouraging youngsters into the sport and for OAPs keeping active is important for their wellbeing.

A decade ago a few of us from various organisations tried to get back the ownership and use of .22 calibre Rimfire pistols for sporting purposes in England, Wales and Scotland, starting with a government petition. The organisations and sporting press backed this UNITY campaign and the lack of unity was a rude awakening with only 21K signatures secured.

BASC has pressed the Home Office to continue what the last government started and take sound moderators out of the licensing system and we have been told by civil servants that this is still on the agenda, and we will continue to lobby for this to happen.

The fight right now is about the government’s proposals for licensing fee increases that were announced without proper consultation, nor assurances that the income raised from changes will be allocated to police firearms licensing departments.

The latest BASC advice on writing to your MP is here:

A PigeonWatch forum member has suggested the following text for those emails/letters which I think is an excellent summary:

As certificate holders, we are now facing full cost recovery, effectively bearing the burden of a process that is necessitated not by us but by government and police requirements. While we understand the need for licensing to ensure safety and compliance, it is only fair to expect a timely and efficient service in return. This should include clear and enforceable deadlines for processing renewals and grants to avoid the undue stress and disruption currently experienced by many shooters.
That's a well worded and very important point.

Incidentally, if Farage continues to make progress with his aorty and ever got into a position of power and influence, 22rf pistols may well have a chance of coming back. It's perverse that teenagers can own Fullbore handguns in NI but experienced older folk in GB can't even own 22rf target pistols.

Done 👍🏻

This is similar to what I wrote to my MP

A gun license in 1870 was ten shillings, what else would that buy then?
A Firearm Certificate was 2/6 when it was introduced in 1920, it was supposed to pay for the processing!

Where there have been backlogs and delays at force level we have argued for priority for applicants who need their certificates processed for their jobs.

I wonder if anyone has ever tried to explain the concept of a coathanger/LBP to a politician - assuming they were listening with an open mind, they would quickly realise how absurd the law is at the moment.

Another good way of explaining the absurdity of the situation would be to ask them to explain what is so uniquely dangerous about the GB FAC holder that they cannot be entrusted with a rimfire handgun, compared to those in NI, IOM, Jersey, Guernsey etc.

Hell, even the Republic of Ireland allows .22s
