Armed response!

In the local news. Two 13 YEAR OLD boys were playing in their local park after dark with a NERF toy gun. Armed police turned up in an unmarked car screaming at them to get down! get down! Their mum was told. Her son has sleeping problems now she say's. A spokesperson for SUSSEX POLICE said "Toy guns should only be used on private property, with permission from the landowner."

BC.

This happened to my little brother twenty years ago in a sleepy Suffolk village. IIRC a helicopter was involved as well. Shooting each other on the arse with soft air guns and the like in the local playing fields.

Wasn’t there so couldn’t say if it looked like a gangland scene which it may have done. Got a proper telling off from the cops and my mum. Responsible citizen now!

Ridiculous

So the harmless ones being kids just got threatened by armed response whilst the ones who are actually a threat continue.

If two kids are shooting each other with nerf guns, it doesn't take a genius to notice they keep getting up and reloading and thus work out what's going on.
I did start my post with “ Sadly” yes it’s a massive overreaction by the police in this instance but unfortunately a small element of kids that age are getting dragged in to gangs, county lines and violence with knife crime in this country now higher than ever. Plus the police are always walking a line between overreacting versus not doing anything, sad times

People really do not understand the processes in play here when they say its an over reaction by the police.

The police don't have a crystal ball.

If some ill informed member of the public rings up and says they're seeing two young males threatening others with a firearm... that will generate an understandably robust approach UNTIL the police can prove that the people and weapons they're dealing with are kids playing with toys. Given the fact that toys now look more realistic than ever and even then criminals/gangs in various countries including ours are now painting real firearms to look like toys to put doubt into the mind of rivals, public and police and you've got a very difficult situation that no matter how you look at it, cannot be completely resolved until persons are under control and weapons can be examined.

I am really sorry but that is a just ridiculus!!
If the copper with fire arms training cant tell a bright yellow nerf gun from a weapon are they fit to carry a biro?
I understand a numpty calls thempolice because they hate kids but cant a free thinking adult work out whats going on?
If i report a warewolf do they look for silver bullets?

Or enough functioning brain cells.

...and not a teenage gang armed with intergalactic laser blasters vaporising grannies, with foam missiles.

How closely, and for how long, do you think it would take a highly trained expert police marksman to examine a NERF gun and work out if it was real or not? They don't look even remotely like real guns. You can choose any model of NERF gun at all.
If the police must keep insisting on full-armed reactions to every fantasist's report of children playing, the least they could do is arrest and charge the fools who call these things in, rather than endlessly encouraging more false alarm calls so they can keep pretending we need more and more armed police, more tax and so on.

Both real guns.

For every individual over dramatised media report made only to try to get cash out of the system.. there are 10 other occasions where armed police are called, arrive on scene and immediately assess the threat isn't as reported and issue simple instructions and bottom everything out without so much as a raised voice.

Have some perspective, there are hundreds of reported firearms incidents every day.

Oh I've got a good 1 that happened to my boy a couple of months ago.

Heading out to take him rugby training just now.

I'll post up later

Of course, you could just arm the local populace and let them sort out the gang bangers....oh wait, it's too cultured a society to have any of that. Meanwhile the law abiding citizens slowly, bit by bit, lose their autonomy and freedom from government oversight.

But I digress....

We live in bad, sad times. Over fifty years of enjoying game and vermin shooting in Northern Ireland including the thirty years of “The Troubles” I never once had responses such as this on any of my forays.
Apart from that one occasion when as a 16 year old with a .22 air rifle slung over my shoulder I walked past a local electricity sub-station which was being “minded” by a Scottish regiment.
Do you know what running army boots and an SLR and 9mm Browning being racked simultaneously sound like children? Foxyboy does….

Ok. Here goes.

A couple of months ago I arrived at work, 15 mins later I get a call from a withheld/unknown number. I always hang up on these.

2 mins later my mate (2 doors down from us) calls, say the police are just off the phone to him and that I should answer the call.

So I answered the next call after 2 mins of waiting. To which I was asked where I was straight off the bat. Obviously I asked who it was first before continuing the call.

' Just to ask where you are Mr 'CB'. Erm I'm at my work, why?
Oh we have reports of someone with a long barreled rifle near your home. 😳

Obviously a bit taken aback I let them know where I was and any other details they needed.

When he then went onto describe the armed person the penny dropped.

My boy and his friends are proper kids and rarely in, they love nothing more than making dens/hides in the park and trees. Sometimes they put on their army suits and play soldiers, as all boys should do.

I asked the caller to give me 2 mins till I checked my ring camera, and sure enough there the boys were in all they're glory. Toy guns (big orange colours on them and all) and fully kitted up in army suits. Boys being boys 😁

I explained that it was my son and that I could see him on the camera when he went out.

They then asked who was home and that they would be sending someone round.

Fair enough. Didn't think much of it. So called the wife to let her know, and not to let them try and dissuade him from doing it again as he's only out playing.

25 mins later the wife called to say that they had been.

Here's the 'BIG' but!!!

They had already had a helicopter out, which the boys were waving at thinking it was all fun.
The worst part was that although my son had come home his 2.other friends (1 his cousin) had continued to play, until 3 cars piled into the street and put bolted a gang of armed 'terrorists' as his cousins thought anyway and they ran away screaming (his cousin has autism which really didn't help things).

Turned out an old busy body woman. Had decided to call the police and give them some sort of story knowing full well it was the kids playing.
She had already tried to hunt them away from playing in the park and saying that she would report them.
That and she actually took a picture of the boys, (the visiting police to my house showed my wife the picture) so again very obviously knew it was kids playing.

But she must having given the police on the phone a very hyped up story to get the response that they employed.

What an absolute waste of police sources and money. For boys out playing as boys should be.
My boy and the other boys in the street are proper kids and are very rarely in the house playing games consoles. Surely that's what we should be trying to encourage our kids.

Our boys took a bit of a hit and were a bit apprehensive to go out the next day. We explained that they did absolutely nothing wrong and do exactly as you were.

People just forget they were once young, and it's a disgrace to try and stop kids playing.

The boys were between the ages of 8 and 11
