Large 20+ gun safes

We’re moving house soon & i’m going to have my own room for all my guns & kit.

I have a mixture of 16 shotguns & scoped rifles that are currently stored across a mixture of small cabinets which is a real nuisance

Ideally I’m after one of those 20-30 gun safes that look like bank vault that will take everything with ease.

Finding somewhere in the UK that has them in stock is proving challenging. Does anyone happen to know who has some in stock for sale? Plenty of sellers have pretty pictures on their websites but none to sell.

Another thought is buying one in the states & having it shipped over. Has anyone gone down this route before?

Cheers

Just a thought , would it be possible to turn a room into a walk in gun room.
change the door , for something that is fire arms suitable?
Might be a cheaper option rather than import something . Ask the local RFD where they get the doors for the holding rooms . Just a idea .

I'll see if I can dig out what my south African mate got, as he uses as described and bought it in the UK. (Although maybe not quite as large as the ones you're thinking of...)

Caveats to be aware of though, they are heavy as ****, so if you do go down the route of them be aware that they are cumbersome to install and are ground floor only.

They also cost a bleeding fortune... As 5MM/.20Man, especially as you're having your own room, I'd explore turning it into a proper gunroom.

This company make safes for mainly firearms they are located in Nurnberg, the owner was the chairman of our local shooting club. I have two of them since 2002 and the paint around the lock hole is not yet damaged.

If the room will be dedicated to be a gun room, that's a good option. You can see what is involved here. Firearms security handbook 2020, take a look at page 35 for gun rooms.

You may have to watch the point loading on the floor for large, heavy safes. Also, with a number of guns, the FEO/Police can prefer them to be in separate cabinets.

As @markyw says, it might be worth speaking to your feo before committing to putting everything in a single safe rather than spreading them out in several safes in different locations in the property. The guidance refers to layers of security & keeping stuff in different places is seen as a way of spreading the risks of storage. Whereas sticking everything in one safe may be seen as concentrating the risk & you may find that you need to increase other layers to compensate for this.

I've just bought a new 20 gun safe (at 30% off) and have no regrets but there is no possible way that 20 guns are fitting in there.......blowguns maybe. The top shelf is also non-removable which doesn't allow for long barreled rifles or shotguns. Make sure that proper dimensions are available or it is something you can inspect prior to purchase.

Should you obtain one just be aware they are extremely heavy, like 6 strong men heavy going up or down stairs will not be fun. Ask why I know.

Absolutely. I have a "24-gun" safe and it actually fits 11 scoped rifles. A good rule-of-thumb is to assume a cabinet will hold 50% of the advertised number. Also, depth really matters.

Consequently, if the OP needs to house 16 scoped rifles, then, if the first number in the sage's SKU isn't "3", multiple cabinets or a secure gun-room conversion will almost certainly be required.

My safe is one of twins, so I can store bolts and cartridges separately, as well as having some expansion space. Because this was in the plan from the start, I don't know if the police would have required multiple cabinets otherwise.

Ground floor is a must, unless your premises are very solidly constructed. Also, none of the couriers would undertake to carry the safe upstairs (I asked out of curiosity, as I strongly doubted my stairs would survive the experience), and the chaps who delivered it were initially only prepared to leave it in front of the house, so the OP needs to bear that in mind.

As for availability, many places don't keep the larger cabinets in stock, but they can often get them in within a couple of weeks, so planning ahead can broaden your choice.

I've been very happy with my cabinet setup. The original price stung even with a good discount, but the extra ease-of-use vs the motley array I had previously accumulated is chalk and cheese.

As has been said before you need to watch the weight load of flooring. Realistically you want a concrete plinth/ floor and not floor boards on beams, the weight of these type safes are 500kg and up to well over a tonne in some cases.

The other thing to consider is if your insurance terms will cover any safe that isn’t bs standard and police approved, mine stipulates this condition. American safes, while inherently secure, if imported may not have these approvals and you might not be insured.

Like you I was keen on some of the American classic large safes like Fort Knox etc, the cost and weight was restrictive and for similar money and hassle I felt I could build a false bookcase wall with a bs / police approved standard safe hidden out of view. Not knowing there is a safe located in a house is the first step in security. But theses bank safes do look very nice.

Have a look here, I think they have a uk contact address Home | Fort Knox Europe Ltd
