I see, nice pair, like the form of the blades/handles. I note theyre referred to as MuntjacX does that reflect the size? Im guessing the specific size is a matter of preference, as opposed to necessarily an functional matter?
Many years ago, and I mean a lot of years ago, I designed a small, 3" or so bladed knife that I saw as an all rounder general purpose thing, but one that did lend itself particularly well to smaller species of deer work, I ran a competition on British Blades forum to give it a name, the winner of that competition suggested Muntjac, and so it was born and it became very popular.
A few years following that a client who already had a couple of the Muntjac requested a larger version, which I designed and made, an inch longer so 4" blade.
At that time I was also making my Secare knife, another popular model, when I designed and started making a larger version of the Secare it seemed obvious to name it the SecareX, being a Secare XL as it were.
So at that time, when naming time came around, it also therefore seemed obvious to swap out the c of Muntjac and replace that with the X, as I had with the SecareX, MuntjaX was born.
Skip forward a good few years and two things had happened, every maker and their Aunties were now making a Muntjac knife, and I was making a knife that I believe, along with many others, to be better at the smaller species deer work that the Muntjac was, this was the Portland90, so I discontinued my Muntjac.
The MuntjaX however, as you see above, is an amazing knife that is a great all rounder but lends itself very well to deer work, it doesn't compete for space with the Portland120 as the Muntjac and P90 were doing, and nobody will use the name as it doesn't really make much sense to anyone else without them having the story and context above.
So it stays, for a long time to come.
