Hi guys, I've been asked to shoot rats in a composting plant. I've been twice with my. 22 and using shorts. I bought a Ward 800l about 10 years ago and it's still working well however the IR torch is causing a washout at near distances (it was my foxing gear before thermal). Any advice on another IR torch?

hello, look at Night Fox , I bought the 850 and 940 but they are LED , The 940 is for short range ratting and more covert as rats do not see red glow, 850 will go out to 50/60 yards but rats see the red glow, Is your torch a Laser type ? they usually get that wash out, . You need a 22 PCP Air Rifle as much safer than the Short ammo,

Lucky you. I had another 15 rats last night v old Daystare FAC with an ancient Photon with a simple compact low power IR torch.
Night fox IR torches are v good I use on my CF with a modified Photon.
If I was starting up ratting I would buy a low end thermal scope and a .22 air rifle. A FAC rated air rifle would be weapon of choice. Ratting is the one sport where I would consider a thermal scope to be a game changer.
Also you need a thermal monocular to spot your rats.

Hello, I use a MK 1 Photon on my FX Verminator 22 and have shot 100s if not a few 1000s over many years with this set up, the Photon still works perfect but needs extra I/R although it was a replacement , The new 940 Night Fox torch works well at short range around 20 yards, My Photon was off the first batch sold when Thomas Jacks sent to the RFDs There was a so many buying them at that time and a long waiting list, I have an XT also but as a spare, It would be interesting to know how many MK 1 Photons are still in use

I have 3! I standard one with a converter lense and third with camera lens. Night fox is v good surprised you find to 20yds. Have you adjusted the beam? Mine works up to 150 yds on my CF.

I got a gamo gx250 pcp in .177 for rats and it's excellent, combined with a Hawke scope and a Pard 007a with jws hollow point pellets the rats don't like it at all.
Started with .22rf which was bit much for the job 12 ftlb is plenty.

I use a Photon on my dedicated foxing 223, paired with a Black Sun PIR. Spot with thermal then Photon on,bang job done.
Bought another Photon from an SD member, for what they cost now they're a gift!
Been out with guys using thermal scopes, had a go with them but not overly impressed. Think I'm sticking with what I've got, does the job at the distance I need it to.
