A fair, accurate, considered and timely approach - thank-you. Sadly, in light of previous "knee-jerks", all responsible FAC owners quite rightly fearing the worst; any attempts to constructively overcome the woeful system currently in place are to be welcomed.
 
This was an unusually horrible event. Unfortunately, the horror has obscured the fact that this was a very unusual and possibly unique fraud. Had the murders not happened so swiftly then it would no doubt have come to light.

Well that would depend on the region. If you notify the police but they dont process in a timely manner then there are gaps. I have experienced this.
 
One nutter ( that hat sort of gave that one away at the door eh ?) Nearly bought a shotgun from a legit licence holder ! Big news? Nope most RFDs will have turned down many . The chance of walking out an RFD premises after pulling out a fake licence must be like Nil in the last ten years ! Meanwhile i am really sure that there are still going to be shotguns in the wrong hands aplenty. Heck if you catch a LWB transit on the M6 on an over-weight Vehicle stop because it was way over weight " on the bump stops " from its cargo of Cocaine - I guess an illegal shotgun is not all that hard to aquire . I suggest the cops might be better off putting more resources into that than some mad dood in a dreadful hat that tried and failed to obtain one from the seller .
Shure he needs to go down but i guess it will be to a ward not a prison cell ? Talk about scraping the bottom of the barrel , when shootings in the likes of the London , Liverpool , Manchester etc,etc indicate directly where the real focus should be focused
Although i have sold and purchased guns legally in the past to others folks have to think first and do your research

Have you actually read the articles about the case under discussion?
There's no "nearly" about it. He did buy a shotgun, using a forged certificate, and then killed 3 people (his mother and two siblings). So yes, it is fairly big news.
The fact he didn't then go on to wipe out a class of schoolkids, as he had planned to do, is more by luck than judgement.

I think they said that they would review the process for obtaining crossbows, but it has gone quiet since.

One consideration to make here is that the perpetrator did consider killing the chap selling him the shotgun. So in that instance, if he had chosen to kill the owner of the shotgun then fake id or not, the gun would have ended up in the hands of a psychopath.

I know it’s a shag and hassle, but completing the transaction in the presence of an rfd would solve the issues and would likely add marginal cost.

Pointless we made pretty effective Crossbows while we where in Junior School ! All government do is "get seen to produce " yet achieve NOTHING! Steet dealing drugs ? Gotten worse from what i see and still every person in the UK must have knives in the kitchen and they always will , the bad people who do harm with them are generally linked to the dealing of drugs or gangs . A thinking person would be channelling efforts into into the gangs and drugs ! A difficult task but far more doable than emptying every kitchen drawer and knife rack in the uk . If that hair brained plan works , they will just swich to the screwdrivers on and on . Then we will all pass the Christmas bird around for a bite right? LOL we a lead by media and a team of clowns and tricksters

I agree with this. Having an online system where you can quickly check the details of the licence online via a portal - just like they do with driving licences now (View or share your driving licence information) - would be a really positive step forward and allow all sellers to be able to double check the documentation they are being shown on purchase.

Could also be used for anyone wanted to join a syndicate, going out with a guide for the first time etc. as a double check all is above board.

However noting that the government would need to invest time, effort and money into this, and the perceived failure of any recent government to deliver an IT system on time and at a reasonable cost, I doubt it is going to get prioritised as things stand.

In Leicester. There's a few but a number are s5, some are defence contractors, and others too have a RFD for one reason or another but all are not open to the public as would be a gunshop. Or their RFD is for air weapons only. So no RFDs in Leicester. In the county there are but even so from past conversation none are willing to even do the current "face to face" regime. Nearest to me that does "face to face" is Garlands in Warwickshire which is twenty-two miles there and twenty-two miles back door to door from my house.

That is a pain - my nearest would be in MK I think, but in 15 years I have not sold a single gun.
So I guess that unless you are buying and selling at a rate of knots, it’s largely a very occasional inconvenience.

There is Lakeside shooting ground just 30 minutes away by car.

Regardless really, i feel for the chap that sold him the shotgun, he thought everything was legit now having to live with his mistake.

I have often wondered about these shooting's/stabbing's were they this common in the 60's 70's and 80's pre computer games ?
Not to my knowledge.

Labour is absolutely unhinged when it comes to firearms law. Every change they've made has been pointless or resulted in no linked reductions in crime. The ignorance behind the quotes in the news this week is staggering. The focus all their energy and money on expensive, pointless and ineffective bans, while refusing to do the things that would have a positive, material impact, like mandatory GP involvement in the licensing system and proper resourcing of the police. It's pathetic.
