help with private water supply

Hi, I was hoping some of you might live in remote enough locations to have a private water supplies and might be able to help here.

I have rediscovered an old field drain. Its constructed of sandstone on all four sides and is working fine. Half way along it, there is an underground stone cistern which would have supplied a water trough in a field for cattle and sheep, although the pipe is metal and long since rusted though. The cistern is basically a stone tank with a dam in it, which has a groove cut in it for a pipe leading to the cattle trough (by gravity for 20 feet) .

I am keen to get it going again. I have some 4 inch plastic pipe and some 25mm Polyethylene pipe. I was thinking of burying the larger pipe and then feeding the smaller pipe through it, that way the smaller pipe is replaceable if I have any problems.

Has anyone else used 25mm pipe for a similar use? Any tips for filters or attachments to keep any silt out? to be clear its NOT drinking water for humans.

Thanks,

Seems a fairly common setup.
I've got a some very similar.
Is there any need for the 25mm pipe? Why not just let the water flow down the 4" pipe?
Or were you thinking of putting a ball valve on the cattle trough, rather than just letting it fill to overflow? In which case, I think you'll want 20mm pipe otherwise you're going to end up with a reduction just before the trough which will be forever getting silted up.

All my cattle/deer troughs are fed with 25mm MDPE pipe. Have a rootle around the interweb and you should be able to find a rose for the end of the pipe that will act as a filter. Might be worth looking at Pipestock website

My only reason for the 25mm pipe is to restrict the flow a bit. I might end up with the whole burn washing away the trough and the field if I did that!

Thanks. I’ll take a look

Just buy new Blue alcathane water pipe and fittings . Messing with odds and sods makes repairs a total PITA to sort in a hurry . Do check the water , sending it off periodically and be very sure your not going to to drain another's water off , that can leave you with a big bill .
Fixing a cobbled together water supply will cost you a lot of time and difficult repairs
If its also on another persons land , leave well alone it can lead to a heap of legals

U'll have to cone up with a way off getting the water into the alky pipe in the stone drain that is semi water tight.
So the whole stone drain wont start running down the route.

Wot i'd probably do it build a manhole somewhere up hill in the stone drain.
So its semi easy to look in for any blockages.
Id just run the 25mm alky oupe and not bother with the flexi drainage pipe.
For my kennel/ outside water supply ive simply drilled a hole in an old farmers mineral lick tub and connected pipe to it with a tank connector.
Stick a stop cock at far end so u can control the flow rate.
Inside a stine drain there really shouldnae be massive ammounts of silt and crap coming down

Yes Im buying new alky pipe.
Not drinking water so no need to test
My land and water for a long way so no probs there.

Yes there is an existing manhole and cistern up there.. yes I am thinking about how to get the water into the pipe - this may take some trial and error (and wet weather).

To get water into the pipe u'll have to create a mini dam type thing, just enough so pipe is fully covered.

Ur best bet will be a tank connector bored throu something.
Wot will depend on ur manhole size.
Ive literally chopped a mineral lick tub down to 4" high and chopped 1 side even lower.
But u coild do it with anything pvc, mermaid board etc,
Works surprisingly well and mines is just in a burn/ditch now.
It does fill the nox with sediment at times, i have a rose on it, but pretty simple to empty it.
