Shooting pigeons in sheds.

Got asked by farmer to clear out a few barns and sheds of pigeons, at the minute I have nothing that wont make a bollox of the roofs.
Is there any 410 round that will kill the pigeon but just ping off the roof? If so will grab myself a hushpower and stock up on said round.

Or is a variable power air rifle a better option for this kind of work.

Depending on the roof material and age of it, even an air rifle will make a hole, low powered .410 with small shot is probably the safest bet, or bait them down to the floor with a handful of grain

The likes of a S510 can be adjusted down to around 12-14ft/lb and would be fine for the job.

I've a 22lr if there is any low powered round they could use either.

Be shooting em during day which yeah could bait em to the ground but at night with lamp or nv scope I'd be shooting up towards the roof. Think they are galvanized steel roofs

See if they have an offcut of roof material lying around, do a test on it

You really need a sub 12ftlb air rifle and ir scope to do the job properly and safely. Something like a Hik Alpex or similar. You don't want pellets pinging about; especially if there is livestock or expensive farm machinery.

My choice would be a sub-12FPE air rifle.
Make a good unarmed recce first. Take time to see where they like to sit and where they fly to when disturbed.
On your first sortie, make it your aim to kill absolutely as many as you can, as they will wise-up quickly and returns will diminish accordingly. Better still rope-in a friend or two and put them at key spots so the birds are hit wherever they go.
Also, if you can, borrow some overalls from the farmer.
Leave at least a fortnight before you go back to make it harder for the birds to remember and understand what happened.

Yeah i am heading out to the farm to make a dent in the crows tomorrow, will pop into the sheds as you said and gander around.
May aswell just get a variable air rifle that I can tune down to the sub 12, just need to find one for €1000 or less.

Im in Republic of Ireland, no point me getting a sub12ft rifle when it is treated the same as a for example 308 rifle here, so need to get license for it, better to get something than can go up and down in pressure for multiple uses etc.

Cheaper alternative, are you any good with catapult. That's how I used to feed my ferrets when there was very few rabbits on the go, used to knock the feral pigeons down, cannot remember damaging any corrugated iron either.

Have found they work better in smooth bore barrels. In rifled barrels, the induced spin seems to make for a very tight pattern and not much distance. Probably not enough oomph to kill a pigeon roosting in a barn roof anyway.

I use a sub-12fpe air rifle and that works a treat in the barns and silage stores I shoot in, but get the OP's point about licensing.

Yeah air rifle seems the go to, if I got caught killing them with a catapult it would be the end of my licenses over here, not allowed use those here.
Seems there is an fx dreamline close to me so will look into that, TY all

Hello, All though that maybe still to much for ferals, an air rifle doing 10 ft llb and flat nose pellets. A 22 spring air rifle would suffice save the bother of a PCP and Air cylinder, Although you could put bait out on the floor and make a back stop, I shoot in a very large grain barn with metal roof so wait till the settle on the floor, even on the steel girders you need careful aim ,

They are more or less useless out of a rifled barrel. I believe they are just about ok in a smooth bore. I have some and they didn’t worry a rat at 10 yards

I saw something online the other day and wondered if it might do the job for a similar problem - 22LR loaded with I think 12 shot....

Hello, I presume a variable is Fac and one you can turn down to sub 12ft llb , A PCP, For that money your get rifle, scope and Air Cylinder, Without some research i am sure there are FAC/Sub 12ft llb rifles
