Signet Ring Resizing

Good Afternoon All,

Bit of an off the wall one, I’m hoping the SD collective wisdom may be able to help me.

I have a ring which was given to me by my significant other which is a tad small (can be worn but tight enough I am worried it may get stuck on), it’s a silver signet ring with her fingerprint on the top and I would like to be able to wear it given she is away for a prolonged period of time currently.

I am struggling to find a suitable jeweller who will deal with it as I cannot assure them what silver it is, solid, plated or otherwise. I have also been advised they would be concerned about damaging/distorting the print on the top.

Does anyone happen to know if this is able to be resized, and if anyone would be able to help with a good jeweller to do this at a sensible ish price near Oxfordshire or postal that would also be much appreciated.

Many thanks in advance,

Ben

You could try Watermans Goldsmiths in Banbury. I know he works with all sorts of precious metals including rings. They once sanded down and then polished up an old half crown for me and then engraved it with something so i could gift it to someone. It was sort of a standing joke thing but the end result was very very good.

I would have thought a ring resizing would be dead easy. Probably needs to be cut and then extra silver soldered in to allow for a extra girth to be added. If your ring has hallmarks, that info would likely help them be able to answer your question over the phone.

Cathy Stephens in Groby, Leicestershire did a gold wedding ring for while I waited. Cut it and inserted a piece of the same assay of gold to enlarge it. About a genuine ten minutes from J22 of the M1 where it crosses the A50.

If the resizing is a very small enlargement then it should be possible to get it done by mechanically stretching the ring using a tapered former - gently taping the ring down the former to stretch the band. It can be annealed without damaging the face of the ring by putting it face down in water to act as a heat sink. Another way would be to use a pair of rotary formers which effectively squash the cross section of the ring & stretch the circumference - it’s a method used for rings that have stones set in them. I’d only expect them to need to cut & solder in a new piece of silver if the resizing was significant. If it was me I’d do an online search to find a proper jeweller local to you & then do some phoning around. If you can’t find anyone local to you then a trip to the Jewellery Quarter in Brummagen is a good call - perhaps with some online research first to narrow down the search.

Speak to Nettletons Clitheroe, they don't do it in house the trade is full of folks working from their homes reliant on the high street retailers. My wild guess if others have said all ready "too risky" you will get the same
