Thermal Spotter with Low Base Magnification

Hi,

I've recently taken on a rabbit shooting permission where I must use an air rifle, so everything I'm shooting is up close. Can anyone recommend a lower end thermal spotter that I can use with a low base mag. My current thermal has a 4.3x base mag and it's hard to see rabbits right in front of me!

Thanks

I got a cheap and cheerful Pixfra M215, I use mine for rabbits and foxing and I never really have to shoot more than 200 yards. Not much bigger than a red bull can either, low base mag, simple to use, battery lasts ages too.

Have you tried turning the thermal so screen is portrait not landscape? You can spot closer stuff much easier

Low magnification needs a short focal length objective lens and a large sensor
e.g 640 sensor and 25 or 19mmlens

Hi Bruce,

Thanks for this. I've been looking at the Hik Micro Lynx LC06 which seems to have quite different specs to what you have suggested. 160x120 17 Micron sensor and a 6mm lens. Is this achieving the same low base mag but with a pretty rubbish image definition compared to what you have suggested?

Cheers

This unit is also on my list. How's the image quality? The other one I've been looking at is the Hik Micro lynx LC06 or the 10mm lens version. Have you ever used one of these for comparison?

I assume you mean with a monocular? My current spotter is a pair of Habrok binoculars, so I can't turn it through 90 degrees that easily - I will give it a go though as that's a good idea!

Forget the LC06 - it's absolute rubbish
Too small a lens and not enough sensor pixels

I’ve never used a Lynx. I don’t bother with the zoom on the Pixfra 2,4 or 8x as it’s a bit rubbish, but I can tell what rabbits and foxes are pretty easily to 200yds and under on base mag and then just confirm with the NV. It’s far from the best, but for the money and what I use it for it’s been a good bit of kit.

l used a Lynx happily for stalking for over three years. It could pick up a roebuck at 300 yards on a frosty morning, yet had a wide enough field of view to scan acreage fast.

It suited me just fine until l recently replaced it with a 35mm Falcon. l gave the Lynx to one of my landowners, and it’s now enjoying a second career as part of his foxing kit.

I think here goes the saying about being born in a jar of vinegar and thinking it's the sweetest place on earth.

I still have, and occasionally use, original FLIR Scout PS32 (it has basically no sale value, works as a backup / for buddy or occasionally as primary device e.g. in treestand).

But it's way better than LC06, and when was Scout PS introduced? 2011 or 2012? We had them before GA, since I coerced my friend to take the dealership / representation in Finland.

Thanks, I'll see if I can find somewhere near me where I can take a look at a unit. Cheers

Which version of the lynx did you have?

Thanks I'll take a look at the spec and see what I can find that is similar
