Available: Speyside Deer Stalking

I was part of the DSC 1 System for many years i know how it works still you have not replied to my question why do both. If you have proved your self at lev one then a quick check a zero of equipment is all that's needed. To go through all the crap and still be asked to pay 1200 is a joke and no wounder we have to many deer . Me i would ban leases there not fit for purpose.

I assume you meant "they're", rather than "there", in your post, in which case I agree that we should have no one out who is just a "wounder".

The only people who I would have thought get offended by a shooting test, are those who can't shoot (e.g. don't do enough shooting to become good at it), or can't be bothered to check their rifles before going out, i.e. people who they prefer not to have in the syndicate.

The shooting test sounds like a pretty effective screening mechanism to me!

Without a shooting test, the Estate may be open to all sorts of liability claim from idiots turning up and thwacking a round through the gaps in trees, or gut shooting animals.

I too lament the drop in the DSC2 standards. Just one shoot and gralloch to get a DSC2? When I first heard it, I had to check it was not 1st April.

There are many stalkers who have done DSC 1 and DSC 2 years ago and have just got back in to stalking and may be rusty ?

Or perhaps like AlexD says it’s a good screening mechanism for unsafe or uneducated people.

Have a read through the comments above I don’t think many actually see it as a problem, like I said previously, those who have a problem are usually the problem!

Good luck with whatever stalking you do see as “fit for purpose” 😂

Sadly i have a low opinion of how some leases are run and find it hard to accept that £1200 for a lease place is justifiable in the current climate. I also feel that any one asking people to do a shooting test after they have achieved above industry standard as laughable. Zeroing your rifle is one thing a test is totally different. This clearly shows that part of the problem regards deer numbers is those that hold on to ground and resell at high prices. If you don't agree the standard is high enough then do your own test and don't ask for it. Me i think lev 1 ans two are more than enough. One stalk for level two is enough if the Assessor is up to his job. The problem with Lev 2 was any fool could judge there standard.

When or if you’re ever in a position to run a lease and your name or reputation is on the line and you weigh up the risks you might see things a little different.

For me it’s all about due diligence and safety and by conducting a simple test that nobody has an issue with apart from you whittles out the idiots who are unsafe.

Irrespective of what you agree or don’t agree with you’re clearly not going to be doing a great deal of stalking as the above is becoming more and more common.

My advice to you would be to take up bird watching, preferably un-armed.

You don't know me are what stalking i have or don't have. I am only stating a point that it is wrong in my humble opinion to keep asking others to continue to pay out when we have to many deer.

Well I hope you find LOCAL people who can attend the ground and be effective killing as many deer as possible to satisfy the landowners requirements , not folk that may come once or twice a year after a seven hour journey ,,,

Re the shooting “test” - DSC 1 is hardly a high bar to stand by or really a test of skill in its current form

Needs complete revision , but that’s another subject entirely

Shooting test literally would be 2 / 3 rounds into a 3 / 4 inch group at 150 - 200 yards from whatever position the stalker sees fit. Not exactly difficult.

The main point of the exercise is to ensure the stalkers rifle is set up correctly and in a serviceable condition. Also that he or she can actually hit the target and be consistent at typical hunting ranges.
That is just common sense no burden at all if you can’t do that why come ?

We do not have to many deer in Scotland
We have way to many the last count put a 50% increase we now have 1,2 Million deer and rising. The count was done with helicopter Drones cleave count dung NND etc Surly the powers that be can be wrong.

Sorry but your grammar is so bad, it is hard to make out what you say in your posts. "To" instead of "too", "there" instead of "they're" and "their", words left out, or spelt incorrectly, leaving one guessing the intent.
I don't believe there are anything like 1.2 million deer in Scotland. You suggest there is one deer for every four people! No chance.
As regards counting with helicopter drones, the drones have a short battery life, and successive flights can result in huge miscounts easily.
