How to mount a skull to a board without drilling it

Have champagne's (mushrom shaped) cork at home ? If not just buy a new bottle & drink it with your's partner. Then thread a long parker screw thorough the cork starting on the round part and seating the cilinder side it on the wooden shield. By srewing and titening the parker screw the cork get larger or smaller enought to grab the skull on the occipital forum and hold it flat and vertically on the shield..no glue or chemicals needed

I just put a loop of thin wire between the skull holes below the spinal / brain hole. Then just hang it on a nail. Can’t see the wire and super cheap. Have done it this way with reds although the ‘nail’ is a much bigger hook Rawl plugged to the wall.
This, although it’s worth seeing where the balance point is - I did this with a large fallow buck head and nearly put my eye out the first time I hung it up!

Very clever. What is a Parker screw? I am not quite sure I understand. Do you create a stub to push the skull on to? or?

Parker are those screws that doesn't need a pre-threaded seating to grab materials
You just push them on with one electric tool and they make their's way into whood, concrete and also light metal. You can put a shim on the top of the cork and you will see the mushroom head expand as to fill the hole in the scull..press it a bit and it will stay fixed..

I have been mounting them on the wall without a shield recently, I couldn't find a shield acceptable to the household aesthete (that's not me). I filled the brain cavity with some epoxy mixed with colloidal silica, then used a keyhole cutter in a router in the epoxy. you can just hang it on a screw then, big fallow require a second filling behind the nose to stop it swinging around.
I might have gotten carried away with this solution but I had all the ingredients on the shelf.

I also hang them directly on the wall. I prefer that to using a shield. Never had to use any filler or special tools though. I can't quite understand exactly what is the process you're describing there?
Why not just put a loop of brass picture wire through the convenient existing holes in the skull just below the eye sockets? I think they're called the spinous foramen (but not certain if I've got that name right). You can loop the wire right through, in one side and out the other, and twist the ends together into a small discreet loop. Then just hang it up from a strong picture hook.

This wouldn't be the first time I have over complicated a solution.

Knock out the ear canals on roe then place two cup hooks about a little under an inch apart side by side, both will slot into the ear canals perfectly and be entirely flushed with the wall.

I cant see why it wouldn't work with bigger deer I but I haven't tested it both stags I have mounted have a sensible gravity with the string method so I've never messed with them.

Roe I generally use same cup hooks, but I just set them on them on the bone that supports the eye socket/jaw Its seamless and I think roe benefit with 3/4th profile with how there antlers are shaped.

This is what I do too

I might just try the free floating skull technique as suggested. Prob best with a wire.

I’ll try the rubber strip idea too to a board.

Another issue are the boards themselves. The trad looking boards are ok, but they cost something and I was interested in a simple oblique cut log slice to form an oblong board that I’ve seen done for rustic versions in Germany. Either cure them with the bark on or rub that off and varnish the wood proper. Maybe I can’t afford the time to do all of this?! I remember just how elegant a German mount was for a little roe head done this way hanging on wall looked, like right from the forest, the whole thing.

I just cut a bit of any type of wood to the size of fitting inside the skull , mix some fibreglass with hardner , put the fibreglass into the skull then push the wood in making sure it’s flush , wait 10 mins and file of any high bits if any . When you screw in from the shield to the skull you have plenty of wood to catch and will tighten really well , I’ve done a lot for mates who just wait on me doing it as it’s that quick . You can buy small tins of repair fibreglass for £10 and you’ll do a lot of skulls with it .
