Made up. The roe doe has twins this year. We are trying to encourage them on the estate as they are lovely to see and not common round us.View attachment 424769
I have heard / read that with their delayed implantation of embryos Roe does can delay the implantation if weather in winter is really poor and doe in poor condition, and indeed will implant just one or two depending on how well the doe is doing.
Would be interested to see if there is any scientific studies to support is it just observation and conjecture.
When I did the Swinley Forest BDS scheme the stalker told me that they rarely get twins as the does are under too much dog pressure being moved about and so don't have the condition.

Not unusual to have three in places with good feeding and does in good order and not being overstocked. Had a doe with triplets last year and same doe triplets the previous year. We have a small population and excellent feed.
I have worked other places where triplets were not uncommon. Particularly the North Cotswolds and South Warwickshire. A Roe doe can be a formidable adversary for a fox trying to take a kid and I've seen one seriously crippled by a mature doe. Dogs are a different ball game.
He didn't mention this but stands to reason that sadly some will be caught by dogs. The ones we had were all shot end feb/start of march so it was fairly obvious!
