NRA have taken over Running Boar and Running Deer at Bisley

The old British Sporting Rifle Club is no longer leasing the range at Bisley so last weekend's Running Boar and Running Deer events were shot using some revised targetry. The Running Boar targetry has changed and instead of taking 4.5- 5 secs to traverse it is travelling quickly at 3.6 secs. Instead of aiming under the eye you have to give it more lead by aiming at it's snout! The Running Deer target has also changed. It is now truncated so the two heads are closer together (like the revised Running Boar target) and consequently the backer is also shorter. Not a problem if your aiming point was the leading edge of the chest on the Running Deer but more of a problem when using a 6.5x54 Mannlicher Shoenauer with a 17.7" barrel. The bullet doesn't come out very fast so previously I was using the edge of the frame/backer as my aiming point but can no longer do that as the backer has lost about 6 inches! Forwarned is forarmed.

The NRA (NSC & their new ‘entity’ Bisley Sporting Rifle to be precise) have taken over the operation & management of the ranges.

They have installed new electronic targetry but there are a number of issues with it… not just those mentioned above!

The rationale behind the takeover two weeks before the expiry of the previous lease, as stated on the website & in the Journal by the last Chief Exec Andrew Mercer was supposedly to make the sporting rifle ranges more accessible to all NRA members. That is horse manure, they were already accessible to any NRA member & at the same fee as ordinary BSRC members. The reality is it appears more to have been set up to make as much money as it can from people with deep pockets & from corporate events, check out their prices online now - but make sure you’re sitting down first!

The good news is that the BSRC - British Sporting Rifle Club, who built the facility into what it is now from what was a rubbish dump in 1962, are still very much alive kicking!

Just to let people know that the new running boar targetry at Bisley is now running at the correct speed.
