Charlie has been very scarce with us lately but, now almost everything’s been cut and baled , we saw 5 between 11.15 and 02.30 a.m. First one trotted ahead of us in a big stubble field and proceeded to sit on a crest offering no safe shot at all , before heading well away towards farm cottages . Smart Bugger ! A few perms later and after the Foxpro was belting out hare in distress for about 10 minutes , number 2 appeared , started to chase a hare , then sat down watching and listening. Probably to my shooting buddys’ snoring . I managed to slowly close the distance , every step like trampling on the proverbial cornflakes , lay down and nailed it at about 215 yards . A fairly well grown cub I think , but we couldn’t find it so back with the dog this morning . About an hour later we saw three in a large sloping field with bales . The wind was perfect so I slipped out of the pick up and headed up a wheeling to within about 130 yards and leant on a bale , gave a few hand calls and one came to about 80 yards , hesitated and 55gr said goodnight to him . The other two went into tall cover and played peek a boo for a while before I managed to coax one out to about 100 yards and she joined her sibling . Both half grown cubs. Last one , around 02.25 was definitely an adult and wasn’t interested in sounds we made and barely looked our way as it seemed to be eating something. I managed to get a long shot at it with bales behind it , heard a good whump but no sign of it although lots of cover around so dog required again . At least three less so a result . Pretty chilly with us
