THE PRETEND KEEPER

Back up this morning, birds all look settled, only two out at Gordon’s pen and about 30 out at forestry pen but they just want to be in the sun along the fence at the back of the pen, they have found their favourite feeders in both pens which were both completely empty, also a couple of the mobile drinkers with the sorbitol in were empty so they seem to be attracting the birds. My shoot apprentice is going up tonight, he’s starting to go up on his own now so with a bit of luck he’ll get more and more into it and bring his own ideas 👍

Back up tonight where I met the young lad from the shoot, birds are settled and are taking a good amount of feed, we hung around too watch them roost and they were getting well up in the trees, the lad has got an idea of how we can make at least one new drive on a part of the shoot we haven’t used for a few seasons, so that can be his little project. We were going to have a sit out the back on the lookout for a fox but when we got there there was a group of 4 fallow buck 150 yards out into the field, different from the two I’d seen a few days ago, we don’t tend to get really good bucks up there but one of them was the best fallow I’ve seen up there 🦌👍

Any advice on what stage to move away from top hat feeders (where they can quickly fill up) to springs or pans?
Im just contemplating taking the top hat feeders out now we've had the birds 4 weeks . about 12 weeks old

I have both in my pens from when they go in, they use them both 👍

I have at least 1 large hat feeder in the pens until I stop feeding them, everything outside the pen / in the drives will be drum feeders and feed shelters

Up again and I seem to have a goshawk enjoying the free buffet at the forestry pen, the birds are looking nervous unlike in Gordon’s pen where they seem to be living their best life, it was red hot up there again today, over the far side ( piggeries) you could see the large moor fire that’s been burning for a few days now. A prime example of why moorland requires management, I was told that the fire had started on langdale moor near RAF fylingdales and has got into a bit of forestry which has made it much worse sending the fire in different directions ☹️IMG_2925.webp

Yes the fire has been on the news Stav

I went down to the game farm this morning to pick up our second batch of birds,we ended up debiting and crating them ourselves as the owner was out delivering and the Saturday help wasn't in.
got the birds in and settled so I went back with the crates and to settle the bill.
the owner was back so I paid up but got roped in to crate up 350 ducks for him , asked for a discount for helping him on my birds😆😆😆got me a cold drink and thanked me" tight wad farmer's 😆".
but at least I got to count my own birds into the crates😉🤫

Bit of help this morning, I say help but my ears were hurting after half an hour so I set him on with picking brambles with the old girl, he’s talked me into taking him out tonight so I’ll have to dig out my ear defenders 😂IMG_2934.webpIMG_2935.webp

Back up for more feeding and the introduction of a few feeders a bit further away from the pen, birds are completely different between the two pens, Gordon’s pen they are in good order, really calm, getting through a lot of feed and water, where as forestry pen they are nervous 😬 the local gos is being a pest and the dog walkers aren’t helping much, luckily I only put 200 in here, overall I’m happy with how it’s going they have been in 2 weeks today and I haven’t had to walk them in yet so I’m hoping they know that this is home now IMG_2993.webp

Similar to mine one pen is getting hit everyday by buzzard.
The other is calm with only one or two look like they have been hit by something outside.
We have a bit of rain forecast this week be interesting to see if things change after so long without any.

Birds are starting to move further out now, I got there this afternoon and there was a group of between 20/30 on the track and at the farm, I walked the back down the track and into the cover at the back of Gordon’s pen but I’m not too concerned at the minute, I’ve had to have a word with my apprentice about the water in the mobile drinkers, it was the second time I’ve been up and they were empty, I can’t express to him enough just how important the water is, the way the weather has been it’s the only thing that will keep them there and I don’t want them to have to look for it. I took Mrs Stav with me today, I’d like her to be involved but I’m not sure it’s for her IMG_3011.webpIMG_3008.webpIMG_3010.webp

Yeah, I mentioned that to my fabrication lad he said when he had a minute he would make a couple with 3 trough drinkers on them but like the rest of them, I’ll believe it when I see it
